I have a few questions:

1. Is it easy to take the alternator apart to coat the case? I searched and couldn't find very good info.
2. Can the water pump be coated? Does it matter that coating would get on the shaft where it meets the body?

Any other input or things I should communicate to the powdercoater?

As for color, I was thinking about telling them I want a silver that looks similar to cast aluminum and something that will hold up to heat and not yellow as much as my paint did.

Otherwise is there a paint that anyone has had luck with? I used silver rim paint that looked awesome for a while, but eventually looks much different than my cold side pipes that got the same paint.

DO NOT powdercoat your alternator unless you don't intend to drive it everyday. The coating will cause the alternator to retain heat and will severely shorten it's lifespan.

Also, unless you can disassemble the water pump, you cannot powder coat it. Reason being is that there are rubber seals inside it and they will surely melt when exposed to 400* temps for 45 minutes.

Having been in the auto electric business and now in the metal refinishing business I'm pretty knowledgeable on both subjects.

The water pump impellar is pressed onto the shaft. I don't recommend pulling it apart. You really need to rebuilt it once all that's done, and you'd be hard pressed to find rebuild parts for a water pump. It's like rebuilding an alternator. When they are doing it in a factory in Mexico for $15, what's the point of spending hours at home doing it?

You can powder coat the accessory brackets and that looks pretty good. Also if you do so you have to be sure to sand off the powder coat on the alt bracket where the alt connects to the bracket. If you dont do this it wont start, or so Ive been told so I sanded off the powder coat on mine in that area. Some alt's come coated.

The water pump i would just paint. As for the alternator i powder coated mine chrome and have no problems with it so far but have only put about 2500 miles on it since rebuild. As for how much it costs well that really varies! Powder coating has become really popular over the last several years and there are alot of people that are doing it in the own garages now. So i would say try to find somebody that does it at there home because most professional places wont do anything unless they have enough to fill there ovens. I charge about $30 for a set of valve covers and that's cleaned and blasted as well. The more i do the cheaper it gets and all i have is an eastwood kit and an oven i bought off craigslist for $20. My water pump is painted it just matches really well.

The altenator is easy to get aprt, at least for me it was. I would suggets posting an add on craigslist looking for somebody to do powdercoating. From titme to time thats what i do and have made some change doing it and the people you meet are sometimes just as valuable! It's good to know people As long as there not import fags! lol

I think It was around $200 for my brackets and upper/lower intake but I ended up getting it done for nothing just the cost of shipping

I would like valve covers, Upper and lower Intake and my brackets done.

I had my brackets coated silver along with my explorer upper intake. I also had my alt. powder coated chrome. This was about 4yrs ago or so now. Not an issue with the coatings or parts. I drove it round trip to visit a bud about 2hrs away in July, drove it on the odd nice day, and for about the last month every day as the DD/beater is down.

I did have a major charging issue at first. I did not have clean/good ground from the alt and it was not charging the batt. The Alt. grounds via the brackets to the block, at first I ran a 8ga wire from one of the alt body bolts (there are 3 of them) to the strut tower to test if it grounded externally. That ground wire worked and everything charged fine. Then I removed the brackets and alt. and sanded the contact points where they touch the block and alt. I then removed the wire I had ran to allow charging and everything has been gravy for 4 or so years since.
