Shift Kit wise I dont know....I am probably going to go for a Valvebody from Lentech if i keep my auto...should make it nice and strong....For an inexpensive converter I would say a TCI Streetfighter which has a stall speed at around 3000. They run for about $300 from Summit, but most guys will tell you to spend the money and get a custom one.

If you put a converter in it, you need to upgrade to a hardened input shaft!!!

Or you can ditch that weak aod and install a C4!

you dont need to upgrade to a hardened shaft, we put a tci shift kit and a tci 3000 stall in my bros stang, that thing shifted hard as hell. had to be careful going around corners when you were gettin on it or it just about spin right around. a nice auto will smoke a decent driven stickshift mod for mod. well in my experience it has.

i didnt know hardened input shaft was a requirement for a converter install...very interesting to know if it is......just another thing to throw on the AOD upgrade list that is getting the price of strengthing an AOD equal to a T5 swap

For a shift kit, I would go with Baumann. Its the lowest priced at about 50.00 or so and has a great reputation for shift tailoring and hard shifts at full throttle.

For a converter, I would look into Edge converters.

Regarding the hardened input shaft, if you go with a non-lock converter, you dont need one, but some non-lock converters require a 1pc input shaft which will require removing the tranny for install.

If you go with a stock lock up style converter, it would be a wise investment. When the converter locks up in D and OD, it is instantly coupled to the crankshaft RPM's as opposed to non lock when it could slip a little. This sudden change causes an abrupt drop in RPM and can be hard in the 3/4 input shaft. You can pick a hardened one up for about 150-200 and it just slides in place.

The shift kits are are OK.. But if you plan to keep the AOD go ahead and get a good valve body. A hardered input shaft isn't required, but recommended, IMO. You can go with either the one pice hardened shaft or the direct drive replacement shaft(little one in the middle). That direct drive shaft can be swapped out without taking the trans apart. The one piece requires the front of the tranny to be taken aprt so it can be pressed in.

To beef upp an AOD will cost about the same as putting a Tremec in your car. Figure with a good valve body, good converter, and input shaft your looking at $500-$1000 depending if you buy used or new..

get the hardened shaft. i was told i didnt need one with the stock motor "before spray" and i broke it in less than a week. A good converter and sticky tires will break the stock pencil shaft. even with less than 220rwhp. i know from experience.

I would get the hardened shaft. You have H/C/I on your motor right? Also one of the benefits of a Lentech V/B over a shift kit is a full manual option can be ordered. 1,2,3 on the shifter with OD on a switch. Who wouldn't want to hold first to redline and chirp to second? I used to give my buddy whiplash in first by taking it up to 4000 letting off a hitting it again...PB
