I am thinking about upgrading from my old dual-points ignition to an Ignitor and a Second Strike control box. Anyone using these? Any advice or input would be appreciated.

Can I use an ignitor with a dual-point Accel dizzy?

Can I use the control box and ignitor with an Accel Super Stock Coil?

Or should I just convert over to an MSD system?

Thanks in advance.

I have Pertronix II in Ford dizzy for 15 months - no problems so far. If you are wary of Pertronix, you could try Crane's XR-1 Points to Electronic Ignition converter. Summit carrys them.

If the money is not the issue, I would go for MSD system.

I've had the PII in my stock distributor for a couple years now. The only problem I've ever had was when it wouldn't start after I power washed the engine. After I dried it out, it started immediately.

Great piece, never needs adjusting.

I have had a Pertronix I for almost 6 years. No trouble at all. I carry a spare just in case.

The Igniter for dual points is for a Ford dizzy, not Accell. Pertronix doesn't make modules for their competition's dizzys.

Good point. I guess I will have to look into an MSD system or Accel system. I just want to get away from the points.

Did a little more research and actually they do make Ignitor and Ignitor II for Accel and other aftermarket distributors. That might be the way to go..use existing parts and just upgrade rather than buying a whole new system.

I've run both the Ignitor I and II in stock Ford single point distributors. Can't tell the difference between the two, other than the II unit isn't prone to misses after a thru the carb "hiccup" on cold mornings. Both were used with the Flamethrower coil ( the II currently has a Mallory Promaster points coil) Had both for a couple years now, the I probably three years, never had problems with either other than the "hiccup" miss in the I. The I unit's now on my 68 Merc's 390, the II unit is in the dist on the 331 stroker. Had the II on a hot 7500 rpm 5.0 and it never missed a beat up to 7500.

I have the Pertronix system in my car, been there since I bought it, 0 problems so far. However I'll be upgrading to the MSD or Davis Unified Ignition setup.

I have run a pertronix I ignitor for over 14 years it has out lasted two stock distributors bushing wise, and well over 130,000 miles in my 1970 bronco. It trips a MSD blaster coil and has never let me down. I got turned onto it way before they seemed mainstream by a fleet mechanic that ran them regularly.
I drive this rig every day and when I 4x4 I want something simple to fix on the trail and with the pertronix I always have the ability to slap in a set of points if it had failed! I also have about 4 friends that are using them with success.

This is prbably really dumb but...

Does a dual points disturbutor actually have 2 set sof points in it?

I have a 302 V8 and have just ordered a set of Pertonix I. Are these points distributor specific? ie, do i need to let the seller know my make of dizzy?

Yes it does, but dual point dizzys only came in 60s factory performance cars with high revving applications. I think the only Ford motor that had em was the K version of the 289.

I had no idea Pertronix made modules for other aftermarket dizzys. I have never seen tham listed for any application other than stock.

Not many people even running old aftermarket points distributors anymore, not sure why Pertronix would bother.

There were quite a few other stock Ford dual point distributors. The 390HP/406/427's had em, the Boss 302's did as well. I think the 428 CJ's also had em. I ran a Mallory on my 427 backin the 80's for about 6 months, never saw any difference between it and a single point with a good set of stiff Accell points, so I swapped back to the single point. The dual points were a PITA to set up correctly and didn't last any longer than the single points, making it twice as expensive to buy points for. I'm suprised they're still around.

Forgot about the Boss 302. Never knew the old FEs had em.

My 428 CJ in my 69 Mach sure didn't.

BTW, sorry for the topic creep, but how did the rev limiter work in those point systems on the Boss 302s?

I went back and looked, the 4 speed CJ's had the dual points. As for the rev limiter, I can't tell you, from what I gather, it was in a separate control box under the hood.

I knew that part, but I was wondering how they cut spark to a points system?

My 69 428cj was a 4 speed car, but by the time I got it, somebody may have put a single point in it. Not sure if the dizzy was original....
