I have come across a few pairs of PI heads from several 2000 and up Crown Vic police interceptors with the 4.6. Would these heads match up to the block on my 1996 GT? Has anyone swapped these? They are dirt cheap. I have to pull them, but I don't know which PI heads will work outside of the obvious Mustang selection.

I believe all 4.6's after 1998 received the upgraded heads. These Crown Vics are all 2000 and newer wrecked Police cars. I could be wrong. How would I identify if it is a PI head? Would it have a casting on the head somewhere?

they should be PI heads. Avoid the 99/00's cuz they were made by Windsor and require more work + valvecovers for the swap. Where the casting number is im pretty sure you wont be able to see, but here's mine for reference.

Just some facts to correct some of the wrong info in this thread.

Not every 99+ 4.6 2V have PI heads. The Crown Vic's did not get them( PI ) until 2001 and that is including the Police Interceptor. PI heads are PI heads regardless of what car they came from. So if you are looking at 2000 Crown Vics, they still have NPI heads.

absolutely, always look for the PI stamp. As far as PI heads, never spend more than 100-150 on a set of low milage heads complete. Stay away from police vehicles or anything like that. In general, police, cab, or any other public vehicle have been either used extensively, or have been abused. Some, more than others, but I wouldnt risk it.

Get yourself a pair of good PI heads

www.car-parts.com is always what I recommend. Make a deal with a parts or salvage yard, bullshaz em, and have them send you the heads. Take them to a good machine shop, have them pressure test them for cracks, and if they test out, send them the cash.

The majority of society, especially with the mod motor used in so many vehicles, doesn't know or isn't aware of the value of PI heads to performance enthusiast as ourselfs. Be creative and you can save yourself a lot of dough. If you live close to a big town, chances are there are several sets of PI heads sitting close to you that will go for anywhere from $50-150 complete.

I have a Romeo motor so does it matter if the motor the heads come from is a Windsor or Romeo? There are several vehicles 2001 and newer to pick from. As far as police and cabs go, I don't plan to just pull the heads and install. A nice port and polish and some better cams will be in order since I'll be tearing the upper end down. What all do I need to complete the swap beside heads and intake? I'm sure this has been posted elsewhere in the forums but it's late and I don't feel like looking everywhere. Thanks for any help.
