im sure this is a dumb question but ill ask it anyway becuase ive heard mixed answers... i have a 96 Gt 5 speed and i got a motor from a 02 Gt 5 speed for a swap. will i run into any issues using the 96 trans with the 02 engine? do i buy a clutch for a 96 or a 02?? is there even any diference as far as transmissions are concerned?

Your current trans will bolt right up. You'll want the 2002 clutch as it's 11" versus the 10.5" in your car now. Make sure you replace the pilot bearing while you're in there.

The transmissions are different. The 02 will have had a Tremec TR3650. Your 96 should be a T-45. The 3650 is rated to handle more torque than the T-45. As well, the TR3650 from the 02 will have a different speedo pickup than the T-45.

thanx! thats exactly the information i was looking for. im trying to get everything i need together so i can do the swap within the next few weeks. guess ill stick with the t45 for now and probably go with a tremec later

I may sound like a broken record but...Don't forget about the Speedometer.

The 1998 and older cars use a VSS sensor. The 1999 and newer use an OSS sensor. They are not compatible with each other.

Further, the number of teeth on the OSS wheel changed along the way. So transplanting a transmission from a 1999/2004 may have issues depending upon the exact combination (auto/manual/year).

FWIIW, I did the 10.5" to 11" flywheel/clutch upgrade. One lesson learned, the 11" clutch is much more expensive than the equivalent 10.5" clutch. If $$ is an issue, at least price compare to avoid surprises.
