pictures of gear pattern

the pics are not great,but im hoping someone can comment as to how the pattern looks.

as stated they are a little blurry,but it looks to me as if it is a little too deep.

just wanted someone else's opinion.

I probably have to figure out how in the heck to use my digi camera better.

One problem with the pictures is only one side is shone. The ring gear has a drive and a coast side.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but do you have "nicks" on the outside edge of the ring gear? See the write up under "chuckle".

Chuckle that occurs on the coast driving phase is usually caused by excessive clearance between the differential gear hub and the differential case bore.

Damage to a gear tooth on the coast side can cause a noise identical to a chuckle. A very small tooth nick or ridge on the edge of a tooth can cause the noise.

Clean the gear tooth nick or ridge with a small grinding wheel. If the damaged area is larger than 3.2 mm (1/8 inch), install a new gearset.

To check the ring gear and pinion, remove as much lubricant as possible from the gears with clean solvent. Wipe the gears dry or blow them dry with compressed air. Look for scored or damaged teeth. Also look for cracks or other damage.

If either gear is scored or damaged badly, install a new ring gear and pinion.

Looking through the Ford service manual, IMO this looks like the closest.

no there isnt any nicks,thats just excess marking compound.

The pattern diagrams are on the 2002/2003 service CD. Section 205-00 under "Tooth Contact Pattern Check — Gearset". There is a sample pattern diagram with an explanation.

I'm sure the same information is in the 96 service CD as well. Just not as familiar with the location.

The fact your car is a 96 doesn't matter. The Ford 8.8 is the same across the MY's.

FWIIW, it does look like the contact area is concertrated instead of being spread out along the tooth.

yeah,

even though it wasn't that bad it really started bothering me,so I ended picking up a set of OEM gears (410s) out of a 2009 GT.

The ones that I originally put in there were ford racing 410s,which I only put like 300 miles on,ill still keep those as a backup.

the pinion of the OEM gears is almost exactly the same size(head thickness) as my original OEM pinion (327s) so the pictures were with using the original shim .036

The pattern is hard to see in those pictures,however in person the pattern actually looks ok.but just a little too deep.

here is a pic of the coast side that is a little easier to read.
I think that specific marking compound (white) does not lend itself to being real easy to interperit.its not only the color but the consistency also seems a little off.

Im gonna try a little thinner shim probably around a .033
