Pilot bearing will not budge! Help!

hey everyone, I'm having trouble removing my pilot bearing. I've got the puller, and I've tried to pull it out, but it will not move. Tried to pry one side of the bearing out with a small screwdriver, just bends the edge of the bearing. I don't see any rust or anything formed around it, and I've run searches and I still can't get it out.

I'm taking the puller and putting it in the pilot bearing and it just won't move. I don't think the grease trick will work on this either. Am I suppsed to hammer in the center of the bearing first and then use the puller? It doesn't look like it would go in that way though.

Any help is appreciated. I'll be going to work soon and I'll give it another try tonight when I get home.

Many pilot bearings I've done in 5.0s have basically "welded" themselves into the crank. I've broken my puller many times (thank God for lifetime warranties) trying to get them out. I get them out usually with my air hammer, being very careful not to hit the crank :)

What type of bearing puller are you using? One that forces the bearing out turning a large bolt or one that forces the bearing out using a slide hammer? If you not already using one, I highly recommend the slide hammer.

Find a shaft slightly smaller than the bearing opening.. a spare input shaftw ould work perfect. Pack the hole with either heavy grease or SOAP (thats right, bar of hand soap), place the shaft into the opening and give it a whack with a hammer and it should pop right out.

You broke a slide hammer? Now I always use a slide hammer to remove the PB and never have any problems. You can also chisel the bearing out. Before I got a slide hammer I had to do this ... not fun and took a couple of hours. Don't hit the crank.

I broke the fitting for the pilot bearing many times.. the tip of it where it curves in... Broke it many times with hard to get out pilot bearings. :nice:

Soap method worked for me - car had 112K on it at the time. Trick is to seal that part where the soap would push out. I used a metric socket with an extension. Hardly anything escaped and the bearing just pushed out with each additional piece of soap added.

The soap method usually only works when the bearing was going to cooperate in the first place. If you've already broken a slide hammer on it, you can pretty much forget getting it out with the grease or soap. I've never been able to get one the was stuck out with that method.

First head butt some thing hard, when the adrenaline kicks in attack that mofo with a vengence untill you froth at the mouth and your eyes roll back in your head.
usally how I get things done.

Then when the thing pops out, you reposition your fingers and joints back into their sockets. Apply bandages and some salve in the places where you left raw meat on the engine.

This is a good time to sit back, have a beer, and marvel at your own technical genius. :hail2:

simple laws of physics. the grease method will work. My father bailed me out of this too. he used a soft plyable clay and shoved it in the end of the crank, then shoved it into the socket and put an ext on the end so the grease won't come out. so long as your socket is close in size to the hold, it'll come out.
