pinging above 2500 ????? help please

my car has been pinging under load above 2500. i can not get to the bottom of this, i just put on new cap and rotor , wires ,o2s , and a fuel pump today. its still doing this. it will ping really bad then the temp gauge goes up, it smells kinda nasty( could be the bag that got cought on my headers). anyone have any ideas i can try to fix this, ihave tomarow off and want to get it ifixed tomarow. my motor is stock with long tubes and ported lower.

any help would be appreciated
 
what is it at now .im just coming to this conclusion because you messed with the distibutor . so if you set it to high or whom ever set the timming set it to high then it needs to come dwn if its at ten thats stock and your prob lies else were
 
i didnt have to turn the distributer to install the cap and rotor, and i also checked the timing after i was done with all that. also just put a tfi modual on a month ago. thank you for your help. think i should retard it some more and see what happens?
 
the problem *most* likely lies in a couple or areas. how hot is your motor running? is this per the idiot light gauge or an aftermarket gauge. if the former, get a real gauge (seriously). what are the ambient temps where you live?

you can also try running higher octane fuel, in lieu of running less timing. if you are at stock timing with stock fuel recommendation (87 octane), i suspect you are running hotter than you think.
you could also have carbon build up in the chambers - artificially raising the compression ratio (increasing liklihood to ping). also, the carbon can act as a glow plug and light off the mixture.

lastly, does the pinging happen at WOT?

give more info and we can get you in the right direction. you could pull codes in case you have some stored - might help us. BTW, there are many other causes of pinging, but i think i hit the major culprits.

where i live its about 110 air temp probly 120+ right above the hot street. phx az.

you think its my cated bbk h-pipe? i think the smell is the plastic bag that got stuck to my collector and is still burning off.

i did pull codes last week before i parked it. waiting to fix this bitch problem

do you think it could be egr related? about a month ago i bypassed the cooling line that goes threw there due to a hole in it. i just ran a streight line from one side to the other.

i was also thinking about a lose peace of carbon. causeing this to happen.

ill try putting a half tank of 91 in there and seening if that helps at all.

i use to run 12-4 degree on 87 no problem. nothing really changed execpt the outseide air temp went up about 10-20 degreees sense then.

that is need to know info. once you crest ~95 -100* ambient temps, you gotta back timing off/raise octane. the air charge is just too lame.

im in the same boat heat wise (in Tucson). i run 15* on 87 octane in winter. two weeks ago, had to go back to 10* to nip the ping (on 87 octane).

does it happen at night, when your ambient temps cool all the way down to 80*? if not, id bet you found the problem.

2-3 weeksago is when this started happening even though its at 10, i put 6 gallons of 91 in and it hasnt done it sense.

the idle is still really bad, it ticks on the passanger side. sounds like a cam in there

CODE: 31 (KOEO) - EVP circuit below minimum voltage. Vref (5 volt reference voltage supplied by the computer) missing or broken wire or bad connection in circuit. Use a DVM to check for 5 volts on the orange/white wire. If it is missing, look for +5 volts at the orange/white wire on the TPS or MAP sensor located on the firewall near the center of the car. With the sensor removed from the EGR and still connected, press the plunger and watch the voltage change on the brown/lt green wire. Check for the same results on pin 27 on the computer.

Code 41 or 91 - O2 indicates system lean. Look for a vacuum leak or failing O2 sensor.
The computer sees a lean mixture signal coming from the O2 sensors and tries to compensate by adding more fuel.

Measuring the O2 sensor voltage at the computer will give you a good idea of how well they are working. The computer pins are 29 (LH O2 with a dark green/pink wire) and 43 (RH O2 with a dark blue/pink wire). Use the ground next to the computer to ground the voltmeter.
The O2 sensor ground is in the wiring harness for the fuel injection wiring. I grounded mine to one of the intake manifold bolts

"When the mixture is lean, the exhaust gas has oxygen, about the same amount as the ambient air. So the sensor will generate less than .4 volt. Remember lean = less voltage.

" When the mixture is rich, there's less oxygen in the exhaust than in the ambient air , so voltage is generated between the two sides of the tip. The voltage is greater than .6 volt. Remember rich = more voltage.

Here's a tip: the newer the sensor, the more the voltage changes, swinging from as low as 0.1 volt to as much as 0.9 volt. As an oxygen sensor ages, the voltage changes get smaller and slower - the voltage change lags behind the change in exhaust gas oxygen.

Because the oxygen sensor generates its own voltage, never apply voltage and never measure resistance of the sensor circuit. To measure voltage signals, use an analog voltmeter with a high input impedance, at least 10 megohms. Remember, a digital voltmeter will average a changing voltage."

Code 63 - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) signal too low TPS. Vref missing (5 volt reference voltage supplied by the computer), bad connections or damaged wiring, TPS sensor failed, TPS sensor way out of adjustment. Use a DVM to check for 5 volts on the Orange wire. If it is missing, look for +5 volts at the Orange wire on the EGR or MAP sensor located on the firewall near the center of the car.

Here’s a TPS tip I got from NoGo50…

When you installed the sensor make sure you place it on the peg right and then tighten it down properly. Loosen the back screw a tiny bit so the sensor can pivot and loosen the front screw enough so you can move it just a little in very small increments. I wouldn’t try to adjust it using marks. Set it at .97v-.99v, the closer to .99v the better. Just don’t go over .99, or you upset the fuel calibration and idle quality will suffer.

1. Always adjust the TPS and Idle with the engine at operating temp. Dive it around for a bit if you can and get it nice and warm.

2. When you probe the leads of the TPS, do not use an engine ground, put the ground probe into the lead of the TPS. You should be connecting both meter probes to the TPS and not one to the TPS and the other to ground.

3. Always reset the computer whenever you adjust the TPS or clean/change any sensors. I just pull the battery lead for 10 minutes.

4. Check the procedure for your year, on my 90 I have to turn the idle screw until it just touches the tab, then insert a .010 feeler gauge and give it about one more turn. Then you adjust the TPS voltage to .98v, reset the computer. Start it up, if the idle is to low then turn the screw in until it is just right, then readjust the TPS voltage to .98v and reset the computer and start it up. The key is to adjust the TPS voltage and reset the computer whenever the idle screw is changed.

Code 66 MAF below minimum test voltage.
Insufficient or no voltage from MAF. Dirty MAF element, bad MAF, bad MAF wiring, missing power to MAF. Check for missing +12 volts on this circuit. Check the two links for a wiring diagram to help you find the red wire for computer power relay switched +12 volts. Check for 12 volts between the red and black wires on the MAF (usually pins A & B).

The MAF element is secured by 2 screws & has 1 wiring connector. To clean the element, remove it from the MAF housing and spray it down with electronic parts cleaner or non-inflammable brake parts cleaner (same stuff in a bigger can and cheaper too).

There are three parts in a MAF: the heater, the sensor element and the amplifier. The heater heats the MAF sensor element casing the resistance to increase. The amplifier buffers the MAF output signal and has a resistor that is laser trimmed to provide an output range compatible with the computer's load tables.

The MAF output varies with RPM which causes the airflow to increase or decease. The increase of air across the MAF sensor element causes it to cool, allowing more voltage to pass and telling the computer to increase the fuel flow. A decrease in airflow causes the MAF sensor element to get warmer, decreasing the voltage and reducing the fuel flow. Measure the MAF output at pins C & D on the MAF connector (dark blue/orange and tan/light blue) or at pins 50 & 9 on the computer.

At idle = approximately .6 volt
20 MPH = approximately 1.10 volt
40 MPH = approximately 1.70 volt
60 MPH = approximately 2.10 volt

Check the resistance of the MAF signal wiring. Pin D on the MAF and pin 50 on the computer (dark blue/orange wire) should be less than 2 ohms. Pin C on the MAF and pin 9 on the computer (tan/light blue wire) should be less than 2 ohms.

There should be a minimum of 10K ohms between either pin C or D on the MAF and ground.

Fix the codes, particulary the Code 66. A defective or dirty MAF can cause pining due to lean mixture.
