Piston to valve contact on mock-up....What now? HELP PLEASE!

ALRIGHT GUYS NEED HELP HERE. FIRST I'M CONFUSED. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO CHECK MY VALVE CLEARANCE IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT MY PUSH-ROD LENGTH IS SUPPOSED TO BE.
HERE IS WHAT I DID....
ASSEMBLED THE HEADS
ASSEMBLED THE SHORT BLOCK
LINED UP THE DOTS ON THE TIMING SET
PLACED CLAY ON THE PISTON FACE
LOOSENED UP ONE SET OF ROCKERS AND INSTALLED 2 STOCK LENGTH PUSH-RODS
TIGHTENED ROCKERS BACK UP
INSTALLED THE HEADS WITH GASKETS
SNUGGED DOWN 4 HEAD BOLTS TO HOLD IT IN PLACE.
ROTATED THROUGH 2 CYCLES
FELT SMALL RESISTANCE
STOPPED REMOVED HEADS
FOUND VALVES TOUCHING MY PISTONS AS EVIDENT FROM THE CLAY
BOTH PUSH RODS ARE BENT

SO DID I TIGHTEN DOWN ON THE ROCKERS TOO MUCH? HOW WOULD I KNOW? WHAT IS MY NEXT STEP? I'M PRETTY LOST NOW. I THOUGHT I HAD IT FIGURED OUT BUT NOW??? WHAT COMPONENT DOESNT MATCH?

I would use a pushrod length checker to make sure you are getting the proper geometry after you are done mocking it up and want to really run it, otherwise you will mushroom the tips of the valves. If you are having contact, then you need to yank those pistons out, and take them to the machine shop to have them notched. You need atleast .1" of clearance to account for expansion of metal and whatnot. Hope this helps.
 
blkfrd has the info you need. SoCal has a good question in is it a stock crank? (you said it has stock rods) 69Rcode offers good advise in getting an adjustable pushrod length checker, your heads aren't stock Ford heads. Tyler offers a good question, but I think with it being a 351w, those pistons should clear a 2.02" valve.

You had the crank at TDC if the dots were lined up (or 180 out) and both pushrods should be on their base circle (the opposite side of the bump on the cam, takes up about 270 degrees of the cam) but you have to make sure the rockers are adjusted correctly. You have studs and poly locks, you could have the rockers too far down on the stud, you don't just tighten them back down.

First you gotta get the lifters on the base circle of the cam and adjust the rocker until you get the hydraulic lifter cup fully compressed or get two solid cam lifters and adjust the rockers until you can't turn the pushrod easily with your fingers. If the pushrods are so long or so short that the roller is rolling off of the valve stem then you need a different pushrod length for this test.

You can get the lift figured out properly by converting your old hydraulic lifters to solid. What I did was take the plungers out, and filled the center of the lifter with JB weld. That will allow you to have a solid lifter, and get accurate clearance numbers.
 
Alright i figured it out...you're gonna kill me! i was off on my timing:lol: :rlaugh: :bang: ! Sorry guys but thanks for all the help! You were a ton of help on push rod length though. I ordered the checker from summitt, it'll be here this week! Then i'll check it and i'll be good! :SNSign:
 
you might still have some clearance issues. you have 2.02 valves with .510 lift, so your valve reliefs are likely going to be too small. you need .080 clearance on the intake, and .100 clearance on the exhaust. also use a pair of solid lifters and/or a set of valve clearance checking springs.
 
It looks like those pistons have reliefs for large valves - just from the picture, but the -4cc volume of the reliefs seems small. Do you know for a fact what size valves the reliefs were cut for?
