please help my oil pressure is higher after oil change.

I just got my new car and it has a 7qrt canton oil pan and a high volume oil pump. The other day i changed the oil for the first time but i didnt change the filter. The oil pressure was normal after doing this 40psi idle, 50 psi cruise, 60psi giving it a little gas. Well i added too much oil and got a little blowby so i wanted to re change it and make sure there was exactly 7 qrts. This time i got a new filter and after changing the oil again i started the car up and the pressure is higher. 60psi idle, 70psi driving, 80 psi giving it gas. I dont understand why the pressure would go up after a filter/oil change? I am using castrol gtx 10w30. I havnte really heated it up or drove that many miles. Should i jsut drive it a few days and let the oil really heat up and break, i have never heard of this.

No,thats not good.Thats seem way to high.

I got a Moroso 7qt pan,HV pump and run 20W 50 in my 408.And its more like the first example.

Sounds like the pump might have went out.

Did you change brand/viscosity of oil, or use a different type of oil filter?

You dont thing that something might have fell in during that change and caused a slight restrictson,there by increasing the pressure,do you?

no i have an autometer phantom mechanical gauge i dont think anything fell in during the change. i am running 10w30 which is thin so i dont get it. I would think that if i went to 10w40 or 20w50 the pressure would go up. Also if my oil pump is bad wouldnt the pressure be down not up

Are you sure you got a high volume oil pump and not a high pressure oil pump?

i just dont understand it. i pulled in the driveway with normal pressure using 7qrts castrol gtx 10w30 and a fram ph8 filter. only changes were a new purelater filter and 7 qrts of new castrol gtx 10w30 and now my pressure is much higher WTF!!!!!

i am thinking about switching to mobile one synthetic. I am going to kill someone if it doesnt work because than i will have spend about 70 bucks on oil and filters in the past two days. My motor is a pro bullet 306 all the bolt ons and paxton novi 2k. The motor has over 5000 miles with dino oil so i think it is safe to switch to synthetic what do you guys think

I would think that if the rings have not seated by 5k miles, they will probably never seat. You should be fine to make the switch now.

Never heard any reviews on the purolator filter, but I have heard plenty of bad things about the frams. I have pulled them from the 4 cyl several times, and they were empty. Doesn't help your problem, just something to think about.

If there is a restriction in the filter and it is not bypassing properly, it could cause your problem. There may be something wrong with the pressure relief valve though, if pressure is going uncontrolled.

You could just swap out the filter first and see if that helps, unless you are ready to spend the $$$ on synth.

Jason might be onto something. What is the pressure relief setting on your pump?

In studies I have seen, the Fram is not as restrictive as other filters (including the Purolators, though you did not mention specifically which one). But your issues are the opposite, no? (you have more pressure with the Purolator than Fram).

I see NO reason to switch to synthetic till you are satisfied with what is happening.

What I might do: go grab yet another filter and swap it on (change nothing else, sans topping it off with ~ 1 quart for the filter swap). Motorcraft and Purolator filters seem to be very closely related in construction, so it is your choice (no reason not to use an FL1A IMHO, if that fits your application).

This will cost a few bucks and might provide further insight.

shttygtstang i am in southington right smack in the middle of the state, i want to think it is the filters since one day i changed the oil and not the filter and everything was normal then the next day i changed the filter and that is when the pressure went up but since then i have bought the same original filter and put it on and it didnt go down. I havnt checked the pressure release valve. How would i do that? Is it possible that the pressure release could stop working after an oil change because prior to this the psi has never gone above 60psi once warmed up. Thanks alot for the help guys i am really beating myself up over this So far i have tried a 2 fram ph8 filters, and a purlator 3001 micronic, any other filter suggestions?
