please help,what am i missing here

im in the middle of a T-3650 swap in my 96 GT (which was an automatic)

I had the trans in place with a couple of bolts loosly on one side,but I noticed that the shift fork didnt have very much travel before it hits the case,in other words it seemed to me that the fork was too far forward when the T/O bearing would contact the fingers of the pressure plate thus only leaving a coupla inches of travel before it goes against the case in the front.

also what would keep the fork from sliding in and out,towards and away from the input shaft.

do the p-plate fingers look they should be further out?

The Mustang's design has the TOB in contact with the clutch fingers all of the time. It's one of the reasons why the Mustang is so hard on TOB's.

The TOB is held against the fingers by the spring pressure of the automatic adjusting clutch quardent. So there isn't susposed to be ANY space between the TOB and the fingers.

Check to see that the shift fork is fully inserted onto the pivot. It can be difficut to tell if the pivot ball is between the holding spring and the fork itself. The spring and pivot ball restrains the shift fork in/out.

Check to be sure the friction disk is installed in the correct direction.

well it seems that it may be alright.

I just went out and reinstalled the trans,and the T/O bearing contacts the p-plate fingers when the fork is approx in the middle of the little opening of the trans,it seems like there may be enough travel after all.It may have been because I didnt have the top bell housing to block bolts,and the trans was hanging away from the block a little.
