My nephew's 1991 5.0/T5 mustang lost all function of his transmission. He states that as he was driving on the freeway when his vehicle just sounded as if he was revving his engine but did not accelerate. He states that there was NOT a problem with putting the transmission in gear but it would not engage. He did state that he was able to get his transmission back into 4th gear for a short while but then after he slowed down it would no longer engage.

Does this sound like a transmission problem, a clutch problem or even a throwout bearing problem?

thank you in advance,
Ron

Bunch of easy tests.

With the car running, does the clutch seem to work?

With the car off, and in gear, is the trans and clutch engaged? Does pushing try to turn the engine?

Does the shifter handle feel like it is attached to anything?

I have seen a couple of these where the shifter cover breaks in half, and the shifter just wont move the forks to put it in gear.

Next is to remove the shifter and look inside.

Sounds like the exact thing happened to me except i was in the city. I was driving in 3rd and it popped out all of a sudden so i put it back in 3rd no problem then few seconds later it popped out again. I could not shift into any gear unless the car was off. Clutch was shot. Works great now.

Could this be a pilot bearing problem? None of the gears will engage.

thanks,

If there isn't any clutch material left to help disengage the Engine from the Transmission, there will be no way you will be able to shift gears.

The TOB would make some noise if it were bad and you would probably feel grinding or popping in the clutch pedal when shifting.
