Im in PA for school right now, and I have a VA liscense. Today I got a ticket for running a red light. I was on the line where you're supposed to stop when the light turned red; I could have stopped, but basically thats that and I'm guilty. I'm not complaining or trying to fight it, but I need more info on this ticket.

The officer wrote it up as "obedience to traffic control devices", which is sec 3111 for PA. Failure to obey a traffic light is under PA sec 3112. I have been told from numerous people, including a friend whose mom works at the police dept that issued me the ticket, that what I was cited for carries to points penalty in PA, which is a big relief. The fine was only $25, but after everything adds up its 106.50 which still isnt that bad.

My question is, does anyone know what this would translate to in VA? I have done research for an hour and cannot find what would be the equivelant in VA. If I wouldnt get points in PA for this, would I still get them in VA? I got a speeding ticket almost 2 years ago, and my points will be off my record in october, and my record will be clean. The insurance company will drop the offense next april, but now I'm scared this will go on there.

You will need to find out if the DMV in VA talks to the DMV in PA (or vice versa).

Odds are that they do, if they do. Then try to find out what the penilty is in VA for the same violation.

I'm in CA so the veh codes are diff out here.

Try a website call www.findlaw.com (find law dot com) this website might be able to help you pull up veh code sections for both states.

Another thing to try would be to call your ins company and ask them. Don't give them your name or policy number. Just say that you have a question, then ask them. Hopefully a service or sales rep should know the answer.

Thats what i would try if i were in your shoes. not sure how things work over there, but I imagine it would be close if not the same no matter what state your in....I'm no expert, but i hope this helps.

It all depends if they report to each other...I got a speeding ticket in VA a few years ago but it never showed up on my NJ abstract or insurance. Just pay it and hope it doesn't get reported.
How is UTI going? You almost finished?

Both PA and VA are supposedly part of an agreement if you will and they do report to other states. If it does make it back to VA, then ok it will show up on my record, but I dont know how VA will put that on my record. I was cited for a violation different than that of running a red light (which was my offense, but the cop cut me a break and gave me a lesser charge), and I dont know what VA dmv will record it as. Running a red light is a 4 point violation in VA, and I have 4 on my record now for a speeding ticket, but those will be gone in october/november.

UTI is OK. Its not what I expected; the reps lie ALOT about how the school is and then its completely different. Have a learned? Yes, mostly in electrical. Was it worth it? Not for 22k. I'm set to graduate in september and then I'm off to work.

It wouldnt be worth it to get a lawyer for this. The citation carries no points, its not like I'm going to get it reduced anymore than where it's at now. You also need to understand that us UTI people up here in PA are HATED. If I walk into a store with my UTI shirt on, I get comments like "oh you're from that school". The judge will know I'm from UTI and I'll just end up paying court costs + my original fine. We have been in the paper so many times its rediculous. It's so bad the school director wanted to work out something with local courts to set up a sub court for UTI cases only.

wow.....:jaw:

UTI is pretty close to me, alot of them drive crazy, im not gonna lie about that. but some do drive ok, and alot have nice cars. it is well known that at certain times when the school lets out to be careful on the streets, because many of the drivers there fly, but i could just as easily say that about the highschool kids right down the road.

that ticket doesnt sound to bad at all. im pretty sure that if your currently listed as living in PA, then its a PA offense, and wont be carried into VA.

which light did you run?

I "ran" the red light turning onto RT 100 North off of pennsylvania ave (the street address of the school). The cop was sitting under the overpass where the turnpike crosses over.

It was so close, I barely ran it, but I did and I know it. I'd be willing to bet that if I was headed home from work or something and wasting sporting UTI logos all over me, I may have just gotten a warning. But warning's to UTI guys are unheard of. I really dont drive crazy at all, but the school's reputation is terrible. Most of the people are from NY/Jersey and those are *most* of the people driving crazy. I will say though that where I'm from in Va doesnt have the most perfect drivers either, but not like this. Thing is, its like every hot rodding kid from every town all over the east coast is jumbled into one school and when they let out, RT 100 turns into a dragstrip.

PA is slated to shred ticket information with 6 months of report, so if it doesn't get transfered in that time period you're good

Just be lucky you didn't get caught with a full blown 'running a red light' ticket in PA, 5 point minimun
