please help

hey guys, my father in law went to the junk yard yesterday and picked up a manual trans for my 5.0. the trans looks a little small. i thought it would be bigger. we start looking at it, and we think it might be for a four cylinder. but i cant tell by looking at it. we took the plate that goes between the trans and the back of the engine, and the holes dont match up. there are some markings on the side saying "Borg Warner Basic-4A" then i belive a vin number below that. will this trans mate up to the 5.0? and if it is a 4 cylinder, can i take off the bell housing and put a 5.0 bell housing on? thanks

These numberscan be found on the tag attached to a bolt towards the rear of the tranny. They are T5 identification. If it's not a T5 -- you won't find it listed here.

A 4 cylinder T5 will fit behind a 5.0 (my car had one when I bought it), but you should get the right size pilot bearing as the input chaft is a smaller diameter. Also the gear ratios are different.

can anyone back this up? are you positive? so all i need is the correct pilot bearing and bell housing? is the 4 cylinder trans any weaker than the 5.0 trans? please help me out guys, i have the chance to buy another trans for 300. but if this one will work, then even better. what about the clutch, do i need to specify for a 4 cylinder trans vs a V8 Trans? this is my first stick shift and i just want to make sure everything is right. thanks guys

First, what year is your car? 94-95 tranmissions are different from 84-93.

The 4 cyl trans is weaker, and has different gear ratios, but it will fit with the right pilot bearing. Take a caliper and measure the diameter of the tip of the input shaft. Count the number of splines on the input shaft.

Yeah the 4 cylinder tranny is a lot weaker. Plus the gear ratios are a lot lower (numerically higher) you will be revving a lot higher than with a V8 transmission.

so the V8 trans is a better choice? thanks guys, i think i've come to a decision. i'm going to get the V8 trans for 300.
