Its the Heater Core
Don't listen to these guys, Replacing the heater core is Piece of cake. I can do it in under 2 hours taking my time.
I have a '90. How the heck are you doing it correctly in less than 2 hours on a car w/ A/C ??
Easy.. I know where all the bolts are and how to remove things quickly and efficiently. I have done 6+ heatcore jobs. Its easy. i can have the whole dash and old heater core out barring no real problems in 45 mins.
IF it is not leaking, then backflush it. Don't replace it until you try this first.
My girlfriend used to have this 93 Escort that the windows would fog up, barely any heat, and smell like coolant. I bought a heater core and my Dad told me to back flush it. I got a buch of crap out of there and I put it all back together and what do you know?? No more fog, great heat and no more smell. Went back to AP store and returned heater core.
TO the OP, BTW- If you are replacing the heater core-- spend the extra money and get a Ford one. You do not want to do it twice.

If it is the heater core don't be afraid to do it yourself. I have A/C so I have the job is a little more involved. Just be careful with what you do with the screws/where they go and take pictures of how things go together if you have to. I hope it isn't your core but if it is good luck its not that bad!
I just used water. I didn't use a nozzle either. I just used the open end of the garden hose running full blast. The water that came out was black and grey, then chunks then clear water. I couldn't believe what came out.
Hopefully, the car never got "stop leak"....that chit should NEVER be used. It plugs up everything.
