Pointless Sub Enclosures?

I'm about to install subs in the back seat of my car. What is the point of sub enclosures? Are they even required for decent sound? I hear of people making them air tight. What's the deal with that? Oh, and is it true that more sound comes out of the back of the sub than the front?

You need an enclosure. The booming bass is caused both by the component sub and the air displacement within the enclosure.

No, In a conventional cone speaker, the sound pressure will be identical from either side. You MAY on a rare occasion hear a bit of mechanical noise from the back of a driver, though. IMO, those are poorly designed speakers.

there are freeair speakers that dont need enclosures

ANY driver can be used freeair/infinite baffle (the terms are used interchangeably, but are not technically the same). The install on a proper IB system is actually fairly difficult, but the results are rewarding---and lightweight.

Free air systems are nice but they may cost more for the speakers.
