poor gas mileage, or something more sinister?

my 88 5spd lx is going through gas like, like water. and its just recently, i got $10 worth (which isnt saying much here in NJ) this morning, and it was full. next thing i know, its almost at the half mark. i smelled gas a few times, as well as antifreeze. checked the rad. and its full. any thoughts on what this could be? could it be a gas leak?

Sounds to me like you might be burning it, look around the engine a few good times and check for leaks of coolant or fuel..

Might be just your fuel guage.10 bucks will get me a little past the half way mark on my car.

Other than whats causing the bad gas mileage.
Its a worn out car, lol give it a nice tune up.
check your sensors too, just becuse its not throwing codes dosnt mean its working properly.
Air filter is highly overlooked too! Also the Temp. sensor could be telling the comp. the engine still cold and running rich (i think thats my case).
Either way it just needs some TLC

Damn, there are alot of these threads! Just becuse its a 4 cyl. they expect it to run like a hybrid. My car rolled over 180,000 miles yesterday. **** im happy with the 15mpg i get out the stock plugs,wires and engine it has!
I know my rings are wore down to the numb! and the plugs are fireing out of pure habbit lol

Can't wait till the new 2.3T is in...

i only got 64k miles, and i cant wait til i find a 2.3t for sale.

My car is a '87 and I got 104K on it.. I know I know it isn't 64k.. but..
