Popping noise out of newly installed rearend

Well, until yesterday it hadn't made any funny noises, but going up this windy mountain road the newly installed 9 inch started making some. On sharp turns, taken at 25 mph or more, the rear would make a popping/thud noise. Turning left the pop would come from the drivers side, turning right it would come from the passenger side, so I'm thinking it may be bearings. It may also be just noise that posi's make that I should get used to, since it is running well in all other respects.

Any input?

By your description it´s pretty sure the noise is your rear end lock - when not engaged. ask the detroit locker guys they´ll tell you about it. Just out of curiosity, have you added friction modifier?

its just a stock type traction lock (ie clutch type) unit, and its pretty much a stock 28 spline unit with little done to it. The noise is clearly coming from the ends of the axles on the outside. But yeah, it could just be the posi.

I think if it were the bearings you would probably feel it as well as hear it. It sounds like the posi to me as well. You have to use the friction modifier or it will make noise when you turn.

the trac-lok should be silent, if its popping you have a problem. Only lockers make noise, this is because they use ratcheting gears. The trac-lok is a limited slip unit that uses clutches, there is nothing that should be making a popping sound. Drain the oil, refill it with 75-90 and a bottle of friction modifier. Good Luck.

I hope you didn't buy it from a swap meet.

I'm tired of seeing people getting taken by some of these bastards.

They sell rear ends that have only been cleaned up as rebuilt ones.

Not bearings it would sound like a grinding noise constantly if that was it.

nah, got it from a shop. The thing has brand new pennzoil 85-90, and a friction additive in it.

It also only happens around really, really tight curves.

Get a bottle of XL-3 from ford, if that doesnt work then you have bigger problems. But it does sound like you have clutch pack chatter.

Yea It sounds like there is something really wrong, But with new and tight clutch's will Chatter like a grinding gear on tight turns.

I've gotten used to mine.

One other detail... it isn't a constant popping noise. On a right turn, its just one pop on the passenger side. On a left turn, its one pop on the driver side. Doesn't seem to pop in the same direction twice in a row (ie, two sharp left turns, i will only hear one pop on the first one... won't pop again till i take a hard right).

Take it back to the shop where you got it. You should expect them to fix it for free.
