Ok, I put a new transmission in my car, and every once and a while it will pop out of first gear. I did a search here, and many people said problems like this are normally internal problems. The thing is, when i shift into first, sometimes it doesn't fell very solid, like it isnt going into gear all the way. Could it be the stock shifter? When I play around with it a bit, it is usually fine, and I can drive it for a while then it normally won't pop out if Im being careful... Is this still internal, or could it just be something little?

If you're still running a stock shifter, also check to see if your clutch is disengaging completely. My old T5 had internal problems when it popped out of first, but that doesn't mean yours does.

The shifter is stock.... I am assuming that you are reffering to the stops that you adjust on a short throw... Is there a way to adjust the shift forks in the tranny?

have you check the clutch cable??? did you still have the stock clutch quadrant??? if its aftermarket you need an ajustable clutch cable...if its still stock the cable could of stretched...it also could be internally ir the shifter...my brother-n-law has the same problem with his 89 5.0...his is internal...another buddy of mine had the problem also and his was the cable....so good luck...

Popping out of first or second gear is usually either the stops, the synchro rings or damaged dog gear teeth.

Since you said you have a stock shifter its definitely not a shifter stop issue.

When you say its a new trans, do you mean its brand new or newly rebuilt? If its rebuilt, then most likely only the synchros and bearings were replaced, which means that the 1st/2nd gear dog teeth are most likely damaged on the reverse gear(the gear that slides to engage 1st and second) which means the trans is going to have to come apart again.
