Popping Speakers

I just installed 4 speakers in my '88 today. two 2.5 sony xplods in the dash, and two ponieer 3 ways in the door..i can't turn it up much at all untill they start popping...i've had this same headunit in with stock speakers and it was fine...whats going on??

I'm guessing the head unit is not stock. Any amps? Are yor using the factory wiring? Sounds like your speakers are grounding out somewhere. Check the polarity ( positive and negative) and see if the speaker connections are touching metal anywhere.

Aftermarket Headunit. JVC SX-940 to be exact. I don't have any amps. I'm using the facotory wiring. I don't belive the speakers are touching any metal..and about the polarity...it didnet seem to matter which wire went were on all for of those speakers I installed...I thought that was pretty weird...

If your speakers are out of phase (polarity) you would be able to tell especially at higher volumes. Not so much at lower volumes. It does matter that pos. connects to pos. and neg. to neg. unless you are dropping or raising the ohms by running speakers in parallel or in series. This is not the case with your particular system. One other thing. Are there factory amps in your vehicle?

Yeah, if i turn the volume up it starts popping very bad.. i have to keep it real low..It was very odd that either wire combination will work. I'm also having a problem when i trigger all the speakers to the right the left dash speaker stays on...I don't understand it. It did it even with the stock speakers so I think its a problem with the main harness..I wish we could find out which wire goes where. For future reference, how do i tell which wire is pos and neg? Yes, the stock amp was ripped out along with the stock radio. They sit right next to me on my desk.

if you dotn have any factory amps, why not just run yoru own speaker wires? factory wiring isn't the greatest, and over time it can degrade substantially.

You seem to have a couple of problems. There is a very simple solution to fix all of your problems. Leave all of your headunits wires hooked up except the speaker wires. Go purchase new speaker wire either 16 or 18 guage wire if you are not using any aftermarket amps and run new wire to every speaker. It is not as hard as it may seem. The new speaker wire will be labeled which side is pos. and neg. Match it up to your speakers pos. to pos. and neg. to neg and then to your head unit. To avoid getting confused run one set of wire at a time. Example front left speaker and wire to the front left speaker wire comming out of your headunit. Then do it again 3 more times to the left rear, right front and right rear. Now you know that your speakers are in phase, your fader front to back works and your balance left to right works. This is the best method to get the most out of your headunit and new speakers.
