The GT rear end should bolt right up the only drawback is its LSD not posi but it does come with an 8.8 rear end instead of the weak 7.5 that the v6 comes with stock kinda nice i think you can find them as takeoffs somewhere on the net
let's clarify a few things...
Posi short for Positraction is Chevy's name for their Limited Slip Differntial. From Wikpidia:
Factory Names
In the 1950's and 1960's many manufacturers began to apply brand names to their LSD units. The most famous of these was Chevrolet's "Positraction". Since then, Positraction (often shortened to "positrac" or merely "posi") has become a genericized trademark for LSDs.
Other factory names for LSD's include
Pontiac: Safe-T-Track
Ford: Equa-Lock and Trac-Lok
American Motors Corporation: Twin-Grip
Mopar: Sure Grip
Ferrari: E-Diff
Fiat: Viscodrive
TVR: Hydratrak
So you comment about the GT having an LSD not a Posi, is incorrect. The Ford Trac-Lok and the Chevy Posi are BOTH LSD... And on the street that's what you want... you WANT an LSD... not a Locker or spool...
As far as the 7.5 in the S197 V6 being weak... how did you come up with that? How many broken 7.5's in the S197 have you seen... I'm not talking previous 7.5s... i'm talking S197s... what was the setup? What broke?
I've abused my 7.5 for 2 seasons now... no signs of any problems...
Now to answer the OP.. best bang for the buck is the Ford Trac-Lok... you can pick one up for around $200...
