im trying to diagnose a noise comming from my motor. I installed comp cams 268h. they sound great nice and lopy. The problem is that there sounds to be a mild vaccum leak. at the same time we installed a zoom steel flywheel, zoom stg 3 clutch, polly motor and trans mounts. we checked all obvious places for leaks and didnt find any. the engine is also noisy at shut down. the timing is all correct. sounds like something is rattling at shut down. the car runs strong and seems ok. Im tierd of people asking what kind of supercharger im running! I do have a procharger set up, havent had time to install yet. thanks in advance for any ideas on what this could be!

4inastang:

Welcome to StangNet!

You've got the best cams in the car now, lol!! They really are excellent cams. I don't have any noise (other than the potato-potato-potato exhause note) so I am going to guess that the noise is related to the flex plate, clutch, throw-out bearing, -- something other than the cams. There is a slight possibility that a cam follower has fallen off if your got the engine up to redline a time or two. Cam followers can come off at high RPM and almost always when aftermarket cams are installed.

OK, so describe the noise you hear at shutdown, please. If you haven't done it yet, get under the hood with a piece of tubing (1/2" Tygon, about 3 or 4 feet long) put up to your ear, you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. When the open end gets close to the noise source, you'll hear it right away. Just be careful that you don't get anything caught in the serprentine belt while you are hunting for the noise.

HTH,

Chris

thanks for the reply. I had experienced help on the cams, so i was hoping that wasnt the issue. The car only gets flogged on weekends now. thought if it had something to with the cams, it would have poped by now. I do think the rattling is comming from the clutch. I checked the inspection plate and found spring shrapnel. This setup has less than 8,000 miles. the clutch engagement has never had a consistent feel to it. I read alot on here, and havent seen many with this clutch flywheel set up. Has anyone eles had this problem? thanks, jason

I hate my cams. I got comp cams xe 270 ah-13 with comp cams valve spring install by shop here in vegas. It's been almost 2 years and cannot find the problem. Looks like I am going to sell my car soon.

Here you go.

After my cam went in , I have this whistleing problem like supercharger. People asked me if I have supercharger. Engine rattle bad at idle and when I shut her off I hear knocking sound like something is loose and moving around.
I have change all the gasket and check for vacuum leak but canot find yet, whistling starts around 2000rpm and up. I gave up on my car cause before cams I used to run 13.5 1/4 with 1.8 60' and now I run high 13 to low 14 sec 1/4 miles. My car is fu**ed after cams

I should have never got cams

4inastang:

You can take a peek over at ModularDepot.com and Corral.net to expand your search for clutch/cable/TOB/adjuster issues, too.

lvmustanggt:

Those cams really need to be degreed during installation. There are numerous threads about PTV issues due to slop in the stock cam gears. You might have a failing hydraulic lash adjuster or tensioner but it sounds like a vacuum leak to me. If you have access to a datalogger, you can see what the fuel trims are doing above 2000 RPM. The unmetered air will cause a lean condition and the (short term) trims will add fuel to compensate.

HTH,

Chris
