possible distributor gear stripped... need help

cam specs - D302-6250-A???


i'm driving along a few days ago and suddenly my motor isn't giving its full power so immediately i know i need to get off the freeway and hopefully baby her till i get home. with no such luck, the ol' girl gives out and i get towed home. i get home and immediately pull the cap off and spin the motor by hand and the rotor no longer spins. i pull off a valve cover and spin the motor again and the valves are moving so at least i know its not the chain. so thinking the only thing left is the distributor gear and am planning on stopping by the local speed shop and pick up a new dizzy but what type of gear would i need?? iron, steel or bronze? the specs are all above all work done to the motor were done by the previous owner so i really dont know what cam is in there except for the little info i put up found from some paperwork given to me when i bought the car.

also, if the gear is stripped pretty bad, do i need to pull the motor?

you should pull the pan and timing cover to get the chunks out of there

same thing. roller cams usually need a steel gear, hydraulic rollers typically a iron one. I haven't heard good things about durability of the bronze ones

If the gear is stripped, you'll need to pull the pan, and clean out the debris. It may just be the pin that holds the gear on the shaft. Pulling the distributor is easy.

Why the D30Z-A cam? The C9ZZ-C would be what you'd find in a 69-70 Mustang. And it wouldn't be hard to find a better one than that, the C9OZ-C would be even better, although it switches you to the 289 firing order.

Pull the distributor and you will know for sure if its the gear.

the previous owner had the cam put in, the only reason i put that info up was because i wasnt too sure on whether i need an iron or steel gear for the replacement... but i will soon find out when i pull the dizzy off.

you could have just snapped the pin that holds the gear on
