ok so as many of you know i am an ASE alignment tech at GoodYear right now. i make good money and i am the second highest paid tech in the district right now. i am also the shop foreman and generally i pretty much do everything in the shop. obviously i have good job security and i enjoy the people i work with. the downside is i usually have to work 6 days a week and i always have to work saturdays. i am also pretty much topped out as far as pay goes.

heres the decision. today i was offered a sales job at the local Mustang speed shop. the shop has been around for over ten years and has been featured in numerous magazines. it is a family run business and they employ about 8 people currently but stay slammed all the time. the downside to this job is that they do not offer insurance and i will need to be added to my wifes policy. i think i would enjoy this job more b/c i get to work with a LOT of nice cars and i would have weekends off.

the money will be roughly the same at either place. i will make enough at the mustang shop to make up for me paying for insurance.

i need to make up my mind ASAP so help me out!!

One thing that I always considered very important was a job that has a pension after 25-30 years of service. I'm not working till the day I die. 18 more years and I'm retiring at 59 1/2 with my pension and my stock investments.

i will get mustang week off every year at the speed shop. i dont have any type of 401K or anything thru goodyear right now. vacation times will be the same. i will get more than 2 holidays a year off at the speedshop though

When you wake up in the morning, ask yourself, "do i WANT to go to work?" If you don't, it may be time for a change. I think thats all that matters, as long as you're finincally secure, the only important thing is that you LIKE what you do everyday. To me, it sounds like the new job offer would be more fun, with more variety, but IDK.

you're doing good, stay where you are

I agree. Hard to say though. If you want to do it, then follow your heart.

Ive been around, not as long as some on this board, but long enough to know about performance shops. Ive seen so many shops over the years, completely slammed or not, go down the tubes. Taxes, poor management, lease agreements, etc. that are completely out of your control. I would stay with the stable job. One of my good freinds, aka Shannon Wheeler, started DTA, and I helped get the word around. A little while later, the biggest scandel in the history of 4.6 mustangs occured. Also, take a look at VT right now. Three of houston's performance shops have gone out of business in the last 11 years that were mustang shops.

I really don't know what a 401K is really. Is that just money that you and your employer both put into an account and that is all you get when you retire? Do you receive that money until your dead or just until the money runs out? My retirement plan is different. I get a guaranteed pension, plus a Thrift Savings Plan which I guess might be similar to a 401K.

I take it that you are a government employee of some sort? Yes TSP is just like a 401k only the majority of civilian 401k plans the employers will match the workers amount put into the 401k up to a certain percentage. I have TSP too, not to bad of a program really.

I guess I am old school or something but I say stay where your at. ASE certified, shop foreman and a good business that is backed by millions of dollars so your job will be there until you don't want it anymore. On the other hand like others have already stated, small business is a tricky thing to run and many just never make it in the long run. Then where will you be?

Yeah, I really like it. I made $10K last year splitting between the C @ I Funds. This year I've made $10K so far with all my dough in the I Fund. Pretty sweet.
