powdercoating good idea or bad

I think that red pulleys look really tacky. I would just do them black with your valve covers and intake. That will look real stealth.

I'm not a fan of black wheels either. It looks like you are riding on black steel wheels!

It is your car, so do as you please. I just wouldn't want to see a nice red saleen look gaudy.

You have a base color, stick to it. I have always noticed the continuity of a car that has gone the extra mile and had the wheels coated to match the body.

I even like when the front calipers and rear drums are painted and visible through the wheel slots/holes (if applicable) with a contrast or matching colors.

Engine trim colors: Remember that a bright or light color has a high maintenance if you want it to always look good. You never know when the hood will be up for viewing. My finned aluminum valve covers are black with polished fins. I painted the lettered area background red to match the body. 2-tone covers are rarely done.
Headers (if painted) should always be painted VHT aluminum, since after a while any color will burn to a grayish aluminum color.
Pulley colors are a personal taste. Lower pulleys are black and my uppers are red.
Aluminum intakes look good aluminum color too. Intakes that match the block, make it look like a stock manifold. Matching the block color is good for smog station's visual inspection when they check to see if all parts are stock/legal. They don't catch it.
My heads are painted silver with red head bolts. Again, it's in the details.

If you want to save some $, you can use POR-15 instead of Powder coating.
Also, Powdercoating adds thickness (.02-.03) depending on color, so make sure you don't coat a hole too small for mounting bolts to slide through. And if ther are any open threads exposed on the part to be p-coated (for a mounting bracket or whatever), write this on your purchase order "Mask all threads, plug threaded holes." This is extremely important, or you will be retapping a few holes or chasing male threads when you find out the bolts won't screw in.

Red would be worse IMO Saleens only look good in silver, chrome or Hypercoated. Hypercoated is if you want to change the look I would sell your wheels and just buy some Hypercoated Saleens, come out cheeper than hypercoating the ones you have, I think

HVCOBRA--Red is a no-no. It's funny you ask this, because yesterday morning I saw a Honda CRX parked in front of 7-11. It was black and had 17 or 18 inch RED wheels!! I kept staring at it because it was so ugly! Even if it was a stang, it would have been ugly. Don't do that. Keep the chrome or silver, those two are the best.

I'd say get the wheels ANODIZED in red, not powder coated.

I've got a pic of a great example, but I'm having trouble finding it. Once I find it i'll post it up.

I found the pic. It's not red, but in this case it matches the car. (that was my point, really.)

Hell, for all I know that COULD be powder coated.

Initially I thought the wheel being any color other than silver, gunmetal, black, or chrome would look ugly but I like the lip being the same color of the body. If the whole wheel was blue (in the pictures above) I think it would look hideous.

I agree, I like chrome the best on Saleens.
