Noticed these Typhoon Intakes on Ebay and was wondering what you guys think of them. They appear to be knock-offs of the edelbrock stuff.

Anyone have any experience with them? How close are they to the edelbrocks? I'm currently interested in a performer RPM type intake.

Here's an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SB-F...009852843QQcategoryZ36474QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The typhoon is an exact replica or the performer rpm. The only difference is that the overall product is of a lesser quality. I think that the performance is about the same. The casting isn't quite as nice. However, I hear that the newer versions are improved.

Thanks!

Hmmm I wonder how they get away with copying the edelbrock design? I know I'd be upset if I spent a bunch of money designing and engineering an intake only to have another company copy it.

Anyone have one of these on their engine?

Ive never used one but I hear that the #'s are comparable. I would imagine that the castings are a little different, but all that really matters are the numbers right???

Well, I've been researching getting one of those for a windsor I'm putting on the road and I've heard that because they're Chinese knock-offs, the port work is awful and many have gotten some with lots of casting flash. After cleaning them up they were fine.

Its just if you want to spend $300 to get an intake that you know you'll have to spend time dremeling.

I've got a die grinder, and would probably be gasket matching the intake anyways, so I'm not worried about casting flash too much.

But at the same time, I don't want an intake that's going to cause me troubles and/or not seal properly.

Hmmm... decisions decisions...

I have a Typhoon, seriously hogged out. Took my guy over a month to port and polish it. It didn't NEED that much work, it's just what we did. That was a few years ago, they may be better now, but it had 1/4" of casting flash and was pretty rough inside the runners. Just gasket matching and an extrude hone (or a good rub out with hand paper in the runners) would have done it just fine... but at that point ($) you may as well have bought the Edlebrock, which is clean and true out of the box (unless you work it over yourself). The Typhoon is a great budget piece if you know whatever you get is going to be big time ported out (so the better finish work inside the Edlebrock wouldn't matter to you). Just my $.02

Edelbrock knockoff no doubt. They seem to be holding out pretty good, I haven't heard anything about them cracking or anything. Of course, then again I'm selling my Edelbrock (the real thing) Performer for $250 shipped...

Lol... I've been reading the 5.0 forums more and more lately. Gathering lots of good info for my EFI swap this winter. The classics forums just isn't the best place to get info on EFI stuff.

Thanks for the info.

I have my own tools and would probably be doing a gasket match and cleanup with the sanding roll anyway, so I think I might give one of these intakes a try when the time comes.

Its a hit or miss with how bad the casting flaws are. My Typhoon was great right out of the box. I think it is a great intake for the money and proven to make great power.

You're welcome. However, at this point I'd be pm'ing this guy if I were you:

Unless you're going with heavy forced induction, the Performer will probably be better for you than the Typhoon (Performer RPM) anyway... and it's hard to argue with $250 for either.

Thats a stupid analogy because in the 80's coke tried to copy pepsi when started calling themselves coke and changed the flavor to resemble pepsi. People boycotted coke and then Coke became Cocacola classic.
