Power Steering Pulley Installer

Hey just wondering how you guys installed your powersteering pulley back on...So far I have broke 2 autozone loan-a-tools and it is still not on. So what did you guys use or do to get it on?

Um, I rented a pulley installer from my local auto store and it installed without a hitch. Is it possible the pulley got started crooked? Or maybe it's installed right but you don't realize it? The pulley will bottom out and not let you put the pulley on too far.

What part of the rental tool did you break?
If it is the threads, then possible the power steering shaft internal threads might be messed up?

Do NOT use a generic kind of tool

Get one that is specifically made for our year model cars

The same tool will remove and replace
the pulley with no muss or fuss
and
do it without doing ANY damage to the pulley or pump

its not the threads inside the shaft at all that are stripped it is the bolts that they supply in the kit. They keep on bending on me. I know it isnt all the way on since i can still see where it used to be on and looking at the A/C pulley it is still off a little.

The PartsAmerica.com part is the one I use - I rent from a local Kragen Auto (a member of Parts America) I can't tell how different the Autozone tool is from the Parts America one, but the tool I rent has both the puller AND installer in it.

I usually use a bit of anti-seize when I re-install things like
that pulley, harmonic balancer, etc

Maybe that might help with the prob

Thats the same part I used from Autozone. Gave me no problems and went on in about 4 minutes. You are doing it wrong.

Sometimes the pulley hub mushrooms or otherwise distorts, and then they dont wanna go back on.

I just used the $27 Ampro one from DAP and it went on fine

I changed my pump like a week ago. It came with a bolt, a square nut, and a washer.

You put the nut on, then the washer, then screw the bolt in the shaft, then turn the nut to push the pulley on. Worked fine for me. Took like 5 minutes and was hard as hell though.

I bought this but I haven't tried it yet. Look at the price!! $9.99!

I bought one of thier brake tool kits for turning the pistons back in on the rear brakes. almost half price of Autozone and its the exact same kit, box and everything, worked perfect!.
I know they have cheap stuff but I have had very good luck with stuff like this. I also have a local store so I can go look at everything. I recently got a brake bleeder that you hook to your air compressor. EXACTLY the same as one they sell in Griots car care line for 1/2 price. $19.99 and it works Perfect!! I can't believe that I messed around with a Mighty Vac hand pump years ago for double the price that never bled them right.

Could it be some of the spots of surface rusting that is causing it go on so hard. I mean it would have taken only 5 minutes if i didnt break anything.

Update - Went to Advanced Auto Parts and rented their puller and installer. I took the pulley off and it looked like it may have been going on, on a slight angle. I then sat it flush and put it on and it went on perfectly... thanks for all the responses guys.
