Power to coil...what's the deal

Right now, I get a little over 5v to the coil. There was a repair just done a couple weeks ago, but that isn't the problem because I tested just before it and got the same reading. There is also no other problems in the wire that I can see (but of course I don't know for sure)
I tested the harness that ends at the firewall and I got something like 12.3v.
So, I unplugged the harness at the firewall and ran the same size wire from the point where the positive coil wire goes to, to the coil and I am only getting about 1v more. That doesn't make sense.
What do you guys think?

There is a resistance wire built into the under-dash harness to reduce the voltage to the coil. The "I" terminal on the solenoid provides a full 12V to the coil while the starter is engaged.

oooh. so what I am getting now with the other wire is probably good then?

Yeah. If you ran 12V all the time, you'd fry the points real quick.

Alright, I just got wire tonight and will try and get to replace it tomorrow.

I spliced it in and am only getting the same as the old wire...
I think it could be the plug.
