To buff out scratches you need you a variety of pads with different "cuts" to them and a machine with enough power (torque) and slight pressure. The ball only has speed thats drill dependent, and the foam has to be really soft for it not to damage paint or else Mothers would get there arses sued by lots of angry folks with messed up paint. One more thing to add to that is it would be a real pain on some drills to feather the trigger and trying to avoid having it sling liquid wax or compound all over the car and your face and cloth. Trust me compound in your eyes burn like a mofo.
