Bare with me this is my first rebuild and this is all new to me. I just got my short block back from the machine shop and tonight I was going to go ahead and put my balancer back on and my heads and put them back together. If I need to turn my crank to adjust my preload for my lifters am I going to need to put my oil pan back on and throw some oil across the top of the heads for lubrication or is that not necessary?

its not going to make a difference as far as the oil being on the heads.....i would soak your lifters in oil though because if a lifter is partially collapsed it can make a big difference in your load when the motor has oil pressure and pumps the lifter up

Was the block milled or anything? This could change your pushrod length a little. Is everything that you are installing what came off the motor? A little more info will be helpful to get you the right answer.

Give the crank and rods some squirts of oil from underneath and you'll be fine.

FWIW i set my lash on a dry block that was freshly machined...

It's not nessecery to "soak" lifters. Just put things back togeather and start the motor. Withen a few minutes the clatter noise will go away, and the lifters will be full of oil.

i dunked mine in oil and threw them in. make sure you PRIME YOUR ENGINE before you start it.

it is when setting lash or measuring for pushrods! If the lifter is collapsed when doing either of the two, when you start the motor and it pumps the lifter up your lash/measurement will be off
