Premium switch

I have been having lost power problems when I hit the gas and no one ever responded to my other post about the bogged motor but I think I have found my problem. I noticed that when I turn my fuel switch off to the unleaded side, I could mash the pedal more and have better response that I do with the switch on. Has anyone ever had this happen before? My external mounted fuel pump stays on sometimes when I turn the car off. I don’t know why it does that but it just hums like it would if the car was on. I don’t know if it is getting the right connection or what but it seems like my fuel system is losing it’s power. Any suggestions? Does anyone know how much power should be getting to the external pump?

Do all 2.3 T need a premium fuel switch

Need no but a bunch came with them. Most of us use a manual boost controler which basicaly makes a fuel switch useless from what I hear. I did hear that there was a timming advance connected to the switch but I never heard any cold facts on it. About half the people swaping in a 2.3T motor that has a EEC with a fuel switch usualy hard wires it in the on postion (premium mode).

My guess on the bugging down is your pump is pre flooding your car. The pump should only come one with the ignition switch and shut off once its off. If it stays on it maybe causing extra fuel to drain into the motor some how. I can't explain it other than there maybe to much pressure built up to when you go to start it a ton of fuel just shoot in to the motor causing it to flood  Thats the only thing I can think of at this time.

Premium switch does make a difference in how the car pulls. I grounded mine a while back. However I did run a loop of wire up to the console and back to the computer. Tonight I'm just going to put a switch in it so I can save money on gas for the trip.

Does anybody know if I can use regular gas on 12psi with the premium switch off???

Well the pump doesn't stay on everytime and I don't notice any increase in the amount of oil in the drain pan when I change it, so I don't think that much gas, if any is in there. Sometimes when I start my car after driving it for a while, it will kind of surge down at arount 500 rpm's and then go up to idle. I don't know if gas leaks out of the pump and then into the motor and when I start it, the maotor has to catch up and burn that excess fuel that leaked in there. I don't know. Can I just put the 255 lph pump in the tank and delete the external mounted one? And I also want to get 3/8 steel fuel line and the adjustable Kirban regulator.

whoa lets back up a second....external pump? where is there an external pump in your system?

Haha, that cracks me up.

There is no way to know how much boost you can run without just trying it. I can run 15psi on 87 octane in the premium setting.
Just curious.....Poor people don't have the ability to switch over to an economy program to make a trip.

85 SVO, probably and early build because I have found out that the O2 sensor for the 85 isn't heated and mine was and it turns out that the 84's had heated O2 sensors. But yeah, an '85

I would check a few other things also like what color injector tops its got ( if stock). The older 85s came stock with green tops while the newer (85.5) came with brown tops. Does it got the inline intakes or is the runners in the shape of a square. I also think only the older 85s has the counter sunk head lights, the 85.5s are flush with the turn signals. I'm guessing on the head light deal so maybe someone can conferm/disconferm it.

No, factory. At the parts store they have both of them listed and the one on the outside is the higher output one.

If your car has dual fuel pumps ( intank and a fram rail mounted one) then its probly a older 85 SVO. The 85.5-86' SVOs used a single intake pump to make it safe for dual exhaust pipes I think. I could be wrong but that is what I think I've heard. My older 85' SVO has both but I couldn't tell you which was the low pressure and which is the high pressure :( One day soon I well swap in a single 255lp pump and do away with the dual set up. I can't exlain how its done right now but the tank pumps are the same. I think you just add a new ground wire somewhere and install a hose with the exsternal pump was.

Yeah, I new about the extra ground on the 255 pump. My car first had the inline intake and then my dad gave me a square one off of an 86 turbo coupe. It was already polished, top and bottom along with the throttle body. I think the people at the factories have extra parts that they have laying around and when they want to put them on a car that isn't known for them, like my brown injectors in an early 85 with the counter sunk headlights, they stick them on the car and it confuses people when they want to find parts.

like my brown injectors in an early 85

I can't remeber but didn't you say you was using a PJ EEC? If your using brown tops on a PJ EEC that is probly your problem right there. A older 85' SVO didn't come with brown tops, someone installed them and they need a caliberated EEC for them to work right. That would explain why your car is bogging down. Now that is if I remember your EEC right :D
