I am in the process of buying a C-code 66 coupe which has a SUPPOSEDLY rebuilt engine that has not been started in 4-5 years. Should I squirt some oil into each cylinder and let it set? How long to let it set and what type of oil would be best? Also the non-orig 4-bbl carb has some mud-dauber mud stuck in the rear 2 "barrels"! I assume it best to scrape this mud out with the carb off and upside down, but do not know how much foreign debris may be left in the carb. Would soaking the carb upside down in gasoline probably flush it out? Advise, please! Thanks!

Hi,
I would go with Marvel Mystery oil, or something with a thinner viscosity to penetrate around the piston walls and let the oil saturate overnight. The next step, I would remove the VCs and rotate the crank assembly by hand a few revolutions to move the oil around the cylinder walls. Next, crank with the starter until oil is seen pumping onto the valve train assy.
As for the carb, if you have a known good carb to sub, then, I would use it. Who knows what crap is in the fuel bowls, as well. Or, plan on rebuilding it. Might want to check the setting of the points, while your at it.
I'm assuming this is going in your mustang and the fuel supply system is in good condition?
Good Luck!

Thanks, Poppymod!

I had used Marvel Mystery Oil for the same purpose way back in the seventies to start a 58 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser that had been sitting for 14 yrs in a garage. Glad some things do not change! I know I need to drain the gas tank, etc. I was afraid the carb answer was going to be the one I did not want to hear, but...! Again thanks!

Yeah, I know. I think in your heart you knew the answer, though.
What carb do have? If it's an Eddy, you would only have to pull the top squirt some carb cleaner in the bowls, then pump a few times to, at least, flush a little and watch for the squirters to do their thing. It really depends on what kind of residue is in there. If it were just the mus-dauber mansion, then, you could run a vac while you're probing the stuff loose and suck out.
Have fun!
