Pressure Plate Touching Bellhousing

I finished my AOD to T5 swap at about 9 pm Monday night. Hurray! Then I started my car and heard this clanking noise. Something in the rotating mass was definately touching something it should not. Damn! I figured maybe the starter teeth were touching the flywheel and needed a shim. I had to leave it till Tuesday. I only had an hour to work on it so I Tuesday so I pulled the starter. No damage on the teeth. Crap! Today I took off work a little early and pulled the tranny back out. It turns out that the clutch pressure plate is touching the bellhousing. I "modified" the bellhousing hoping that it wouldn't touch anymore, but damnit it stll does. It's not a clank, but a scrape now. I don't want to pull the tranny again and I don't know what else I can do to give the bellhousing more clearance. So I'm seriously considering starting the car and letting it run till the noise is gone.

Has anyone had this happen? It's a King Cobra clutch and pressure plate and a stock Borg and Warner T5 and stock bellhousing.

You seriously had to have installed something wrong. Where exactly did you have to clearence the bellhousing? And what was hitting?

Do you need to ajust the pivot ball for the clutch fork?

What year is the t-5 from and what model car?

I think the pivot ball is okay. I could barely push the clutch fork/release bearing over the pivot ball when instaling it.

I don't remember exactly where but I clearanced the belhousing on the lower half. I think below the pivot ball. The scrape mark was across about a quarter of the housing. It was the outermost part of the pressure plate.

What could I have installed wrong? It's pretty straight forward.

Engine + Spacer plate + Flywheel + Clutch + pressure plate + bellhousing + Clutch Fork/Release Bearing + T5

did you put a spacer between the flywheel and the crank. i know you have to shim most flexplates (from what i understand anyways) but you dont need it on the flywheel for a 5 spd. i dont know, just throwing out some options

I didn't add one. And there wasn't one on there when I took the flexplate off.

I'm not sure if the bellhousing was different, but could it maybe be a pre '86 bell, with the 10" clutch, versus the 10.5" clutch on the '86-present Mustangs? Again, I really don't know if the bellhousing was different, but it may be worth looking in to?

I was wondering about that as well.

same bellhousing. the ONLY bells that were different were the early 4 speed srod bells. that won't work with a t5, as they have the same bolt pattern as a tremec.

additionally, the early 10" flywheels were the same size, it's only the surface area that's bigger. (that's why you can re use the same starter and bell on an earlier conversion car)

I have to assume, since you're doing an aod to t5 conversion that you've got the wrong parts installed. Everything bolted up, but I'm betting everything isn't oem stock type issue. It's either a wacko bell, a funky flywheel, or a strange clutch and pressure plate.

Regardless, I sure wouldn't feel safe with that stuff running 2 feet from my crotch. The only safe solution is to pull it all and do a thorough investigation to what parts you have, and/or what's broken.

PeteyAce had this same problem. he installed a HD clutch in place of the cobra and it worked find. i bought his cobra clutch and it worked fine for me.

At least I'm not the only one, but damn. I can't afford to buy another clucth now. And I don't think I'll be able to sell this one since the pressure plate has scratches where it's touching the bellhousing.
I looked at PeteyAce's post. It's the exact same problem I have. The picture of his bellhousing could be a picture of mine.

Not sure what I'm gonna do about it.

I did drive it a few miles this morning everything seemed to work okay except that the clutch engages right off the floor (and there is the scraping noise from the bellhousing/pressure plate). The cable needs adjusting for sure. If the cable is tightened (where it is supposed to be) would this put pressure on the pressure plate? I ask because when I depress the clutch the noise goes away. Maybe that would fix it?

Either way I need to adjust the cable tonight or tommorow before I start it again.

Thanks for the info. That's one less question.

Here is what I have:
OEM T5 Bellhousing
OEM Block Plate
OEM Clutch Fork
Borg and Warner t-5 from 5.0
D and D Motorsports Quadrant and Cable
King Cobra Clutch Kit
Hawks Racing Billet Flywheel 157 tooth 50 oz.

Well I tried adjusting the clutch cable and that didn't help. So I ordered a new Ram HD Clutch. I guess that's what credit cards are for. Hopefully it turns out okay. Any one intrested in a King Cobra Clutch with about two miles on it? The pressure plate is obviously scratched up some. Make me an offer.
