i got the spec sheet for my base coat and it says to use 6-8 psi with the HVLP gun(which is what we have) but the guy says like 50-60 recomended psi on the box. any suggestions?

The psi given for the HVLP gun is the pressure at the air cap. You would need a special gauge to read that exactly. 50-60 psi at the gun in my experience will give you way to much air. I usually end up spraying with my regulator, before the hose, set between 20-35 psi. This is with a DeVillbiss Finish Line III HVLP gun.
