Priming in my garage???

The car's not quite finished yet, but if the weather holds out this weekend, I'll take a few pics and email them to you. I'd love to see it anywhere on your site! Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for the encouragement to do it in the first place, I recommend paintucation.com every chance I get. Like most people, I'm on a tight budget, so I had to bend a few rules, like I used the same Devilbiss Finishline 3 from start to finish. I know it's kind of a no-no, but various size tips were $27 and a different gun was $150. But one thing I didn't compromise on was a fresh-air supply anytime I shot anything with catalyst. I don't think everyone realizes how severe iso-poisoning can be. Dead people don't care how nice the paint is.

I also painted my car in stages over a 7 month period in a detached garage. The weather was quite cold ( around 0-10 degrees F.) I had to have heat on at the time as well as a heater with a fan. I hung a bedsheet about 4' in front of the fan which was in a fixed position pointing toward the car. The sheet saved me as the overspray in the garage would get sucked through the fan/heater, the dry immediately and fire dried paint particles toward the sheet. Nice! I love the "II's" they dont get the credit they deserve IMHO

That's a hard color to spray as well, looks even and streak/mottle free in the pics.

It seems like that color likes three coats of base so it doesn't get "blotchy" or whatever the term is. I know with a lot of colors you can get away with two, but that one - eehhh, not so much.

the other thing to remember with high metallics is that after the car is "colored", turn the gun pressure down, (20-25 psi at the gun) then reduce another cup full of color another 30%, mist the entire vehicle using a different pattern from what was used for the first coats. (i like a diagonal pattern) this is called the drop coat, and it can really save you from mottling, tiger stripes, and uneveness.

Hey Kevin, what was the paint you guys used on the Cherokee?

I'll have to admit, I wasn't paying close attention until you said you paid $70 for the paint.

It looked nice, at least on my tv..............

Thanks Kevin (kttrucks), that means a lot coming from you! I really appreciate the comment on the IIs in general as well, as they do seem to be the black sheep of the Mustang family. I did get really lucky on this one.

Here's one more tip.

When mine got painted in the garage we made a 2 foot by 16 foot square out of 2x4 and stapled furnace filters to it. It then was put under a partially closed garage door. That was for our fresh air supply.

We stapled plastic sheets to the studs(walls and ceiling). We wet the floor and put a box fan in the back window to help remove the fumes.

No problems, no bugs.

Thanks Jimmy. That is a great tip. Alot of people do not think of a fresh air supply source and end up sucking dirt out of all of the nooks and crannies. In my case, it was so cold out I had to choose heat or ventilation and the heat won. That is why there is so much overspray in the air in the above pics. Actually there was a wood fired boiler burning flat out 5 feet from where I was spraying. That had me a little nervous! Only in Canada eh!

The paint on the "Cheep Cherokee" is PPG light industrial coating acrylic enamel. It's equipment enamel, but has nice gloss holdout and a fairly decent color selection, at least for trailer paint! I joke.... it's a VERY inexpensive system, cost $68.00 for the setup. Woud I recommend it for a restoration? nope. BUt it's great for a scuff-n-shoot or a budget buildup. For a "nice" paintjob, nothing beats base/clear in my book.

BTW, watch TRUCKS! this weekend, our '37 Ford truck gets a paintjob! It's going to be given away this fall, anyone (except me...) can win it! Ya just gott enter.

OFF topic, has anybody ever seen a Mustang II with a 4.6 i it? Just curious.

Hey Kevin, why is Spike's Power Block programs usually re-runs? I watch every weekend, but usually Musclecar is a repeat and they've even been showing a lot of the old Trucks episodes with Stacy on them? Any chance you can pull some strings for us? BTW, if there were a 24/7 paint channel, I would have my DVR full in no time. The more body and paint stuff, the better!

The paint will actually be for my budget jeep project, so trailer paint is perfect.... The more durable the better. From the chart you held up I swore I saw a color close to Wrangler Red.

As far as the truck goes, I'll be watching. I live less than 2 miles from where you picked the truck up at Down's Manufacturing in Lawton MI. My daughter and I were amused to see the first episode when you guys were pulling out of the parking lot and knew you were driving past our house on the way to the hwy. It looks like it will be really nice when it's done. I'm also happy to see a ford in a ford so to speak.

Kevin, I can't wait to see the 37 finished. I don't think Canadians would be eligible to win, would they?
With respect to a 4.6 in a II, check this out. It appears there had to be some cutting on the inner fenders to make it work.
