pro 5.0 shifter question

i bought a used pro 5.0 shifter said to be working properly. i received it this morning. i noticed immediately how much play there is in the stick. it's completely loose. should i not be able to feel the spring mechanism, even uninstalled, or am i incorrect about this?

is this a pro 5.0 short-throw shifter for a manual tranny? If so all of the tension is provided by the linkage inside the transmission, there is a spring and a ball on the shift linkage that holds the stick in place.

The shifter itself shouldn't have any tension. It's all in the tranny.

it is for a 5 speed tranny.

My MGW had no play and was hard to move side to side (self centering) when not installed....hinse the never miss 3rd agian.
