does anyone else with a 94-95 5.0 have this kind of problem? at idol unless i have it turned up over 1000, sounds like its going to die and the motor sounds like its running out of gas. i was told because of the way my cold air goes the air doesnt flow through the sensor correctly, could this be it? causing the computer to read things incorrectly and not put enough fuel in.

i was also told that i could turn the pro m and make it so the air flows from the filter around the bend right into the sensor, but if i tried to do that the bolts dont line up so i would be forced to cut, turn and reweld things. has anyone one heard or anything about something like this?

Twisting the maf a bit or as most call it, "clocking the maf" is a trick that has been around for quite some time. Sometimes as change of as little as 1/8 of a turn will make for a stable idel.

Since the stock air pipe system and maf on our cars has the four bolt flange setup ........... clocking the maf is more difficult than for the Fox Stangs as they don't use the flange setup.

This little trick doesn't always work but it is worth a try.

if your having problems with your MAF, contact Granatelli motorsports, or as they are called now, Pro-M West.

like Smokdya said, it could just be the computer not liking your cam. with them, its hit or miss.

yeah, no crap about 94-95's not liking cams... Im going to change over to an 89 computer soon, because this is the second cam Ive had in it, with still that same problems (down on power, unstable idel, running rich as hell)

i had a pro M, and i replaced it with a C&L, it helped, but the meter was not my main problem...

NO switching to an older computer is just gonna delay the need for an actual tune. If you are modding your car then you are going to need a tune sooner or later so why waste money? Just get a tune on your computer with a chip, tweecer, pms, etc. It will run BETTER than it would with the older computer and you wont have idle problems, or any problems for that matter.

It makes no sense to me why guys spend so much money to switch back to the older computer. Have you ever thought about getting your current one tuned?

yes, but i already have two different chips and the more mods i do, the futher away from the program I get... in the long run a PMS is nice, but at a grand i think i can wait

ive always looked at tweecers, but never really understood how hard/easy they are to use/operate?

all i know is that with my 89 gt, i could do any mod i wanted and the thing ran perfect - without a chip... switching to such a easily plyable computer like that makes sense to me?

If it ran perfect with the older computer...why do people tune the older computers? Sure it could have worked fine...but could it have used the tune? I just dont understand spending money to switch to another STOCK computer...when u can put that money towards a tuning device that you WILL need and WILL benefit from. The PMS (or tweecer for that matter) WILL handle anything you throw at it and you will be able to get it to run very well. The PMS will be able to do it much easier with a much less of a learning curve. You will get your current combo running great and then you will be able to tune ANY other combo u switch to in the future. Can you say that for the fox computer?

Oh BTW, i paid $395 shipped for my pre-04 PMS. No one ever said you had to buy a 04...the pre 04 versions do JUST fine. And its not a grand for a brand new one :p The PMS has A LOT of neat little add-ons that make the price worth it IMO, although the tweecer goes into greater detail inside the computer.

Man O Man do I understand about the cost of tuning but if you want to go beyond twisting the dizzy & afpr there is no cheap way to do it and the more tuning options you want the more you gotta spend.

I use the Tweecer and I'm not gonna tell you its a piece of cake but you can kinda learn as you go. One of the nice things about the Tweecer is you get a self tuning interface AND a datalogger all in one. Hard data is a must IMHO but ............ others don't see the need for it so I guess each has to decide about that.

I sure can understand what you are saying but I've seen the h/c/i Fox boys on the Tweecer sites crying the drivability blues just like the h/c/i peeps do on this site.

Our pcm's are more fussy about just a few mods and the Fox pcm's will allow more mods as you pointed out.

However

I think the important question is.....................
At what point does the Fox pcm start to cause drivability issues and .....or.....starts to prevent max power without a custom tune to help it?

I don't know where that point is with the Fox pcm but it is there somewhere if the goal of the owner is max power from a na combo and the drivability needed for a daily driver street car.

hey, i'm not saying that the fox computer is "better", im just saying that it handles mods better, and you can make the switch for under 100 bucks...

i know that in the long run a pcm is the best way to go, but from where i sit, 100-150 is about all i have at any given time to spend on my car, because i just don't budget for a 400-800 dollar item, and if i did, it would be like a new shortblock, trans or something big, not a computer...

i know that not everyone is in the money crunch like i am, but still, the fox computer is not the devil just because it's older...

Oh man i TOTALLY understand where you are coming from. I was under the impression that it would take more $$$ to make the switch, i never heard it could be done for $100. I was thinking a couple hundred for that kit whoever sells.

I would just hate for you to spend $100 now and then find out u still need a tuner and that $100 could have went towards that $400 for a pre 04 PMS. The older computer does handle small mods better but its gonna need a tune at one point too so i guess it depends on if you will take your car to that point

Happy Modding! :flag:

silverbullit's 88 has an 89 computer and MAF set up in it.. along with every other bolt on, H/C/I... there's nothing else that he can do. Besides a blower, but he has the bottle and a high compression 306. That car never needed more than the timing set and the fuel pressure taken down when he went to 30 lb/hr injectors, and it absolutely screams.

My car does not have as much done to it and you can't fricking drive it withouth the chip in it

Doesnt your car have a blower on it? Or u talking about a different car then whats listed in your sig?

Its already a given that the old computers accept mods better. What the question is could he use a tune? The REAL question is how lucky he got with his MAF calibration since that decides where you need fuel at. As you probably already know, each maf is different, and not one is perfect. So a computer may be able to adjust it...but most people like to be around the 12.5:1 area for the air/fuel ratio where the computer aims for 14.6 right?

So unless you seriously can do the computer switch for $100, i dont see the point because a MAF alone can call for a tune on ANY computer. Maybe he is lucky, cause there are guys with the older computers that complain about things so dont think its a guarantee that it will work flawlessly. It would be a PITA if u switched....and still needed a tune :bang:

BTW, how can u do it for $100 when those kits run $4-500 right?

no - the "kits" are a waste of time... you just take an older computer and plug it in... switch 4 wires and you're good. You take like wire 16 and switch it with 4 and you soder them in... piece of cake. But those numbers are not the actual ones... i forget which ones they are, but there is a chart out there somewhere that tells you the ones.

i'll agree that he got lucky, and that some guys don't... but the way i see it, ive got extra computers, so it won't cast me anything but the time and i think it's worth a shot.

to answer your question, yes i have a blower, but the head unit is not on the car right now - im trying to get it to run right before i add boost to the equation...

i'll not argue that a tuner is better - but im just saying there are other ways to get a combo up and running right. To tell the truth, im just not a fan of paying so much for something that i think should work right in the first place... JMO

I gotcha on everything except for this.....our computers dont work right in the first place? How can u change an engine and everything it does from the inside out and expect it to be fine?

Very good info and thanks for sharing it.

I was not aware you could just rewire the pcm connector and not need the kit from ProM.

With the ProM kit you need a msd ignition to make the retrofit pcm work correctly.

Your friend who did what you are telling us about in this thread...............
is he using the stock ignition or an after market ignition?
