alright, so today I changed my oil, put a new airfilter in, and installed a speedcal. it was getting dark by the time I finished the speed-cal, so when i was done I started it up and drove down the road to test it out. the speedo wasn't moving. I'm assuming it was a loose connection, I'm going to wait till tomorrow to check it out. so I continued down the road and decided to make a loop around the block and head back to my house. I slowed down for a stop sign and just before I stopped, the car died. I restarted it, and it idled fine, I took off approaching another stop sign, and it did the same thing. the car idles fine and has just as much power as before, but now seems to died when ever I'm slowing down. is this happening because the speedo is not functioning? or is it another problem?

I would think its unrelated...water in the gas? How long has it been since you have driven it? You changed the air filter too? Maybe got some junk on the MAF?

I just took it out again. It seem to only stall out if I use engine braking. so if i keep it in second and slowly slow down, it makes kinda a quiet gurgling/backfiring noise, not the normal noise it usually makes when i leave it in gear to slow down. then when I'm at about 1500rpm's, I'll put my foot on the clutch, and it just dies. I gave it some gas this time, and the car is very noticeably faster then it was before I worked on it. but, this could be because the airfilter i took out of it was so dirty that it looked like brown cardboard. I remember hearing somewhere that the maf has its own brain. Could it be that the maf had adjusted itself to the old very restrictive airfilter, and now that the new better flowing airfilter is in it, it's getting confused?

I drive the car almost every day. I'll take a look at the maf when its light out. if it is dirty, any tips on how to clean it w/o damaging it

wanna know where my speed cal is? Sitting on my closet floor. I had the same problems with stalling, and speedo not working. I heard someone say it wont work on below 1999 cars, so I took it out, and replaced the speedo gear. Guess what, car doesn't stall anymore. I also had a check engine light on when it was installed that wasnt there before the install. The code was something about idle position sensor. I had the sensor checked, and it was fine. Problem was the speed cal. It was doing something to throw the code. Get rid of the speed cal, and disconnect your battery for 10 minutes to reset the computer. This should fix your problem.

oh well, maybe I'll just take it off and put it on ebay or something. the only reason i got the speedcal was because I kept hearing how the gear swap was only a temp. thing and the gear was known to shred in the tranny. It seems my only option left is to get a chip. whats the cheapest chip that will work on my car. I'm probably am going to have to put a temp gear because my car has a speed limiter on it at 118mph or something like that. with the 4.10 and stock yellow speedo gear, I am scared that my car is going to hit 118 mark at like 80mph. then again that might me a good thing for me :D
