Problem at first startup

This happens in the morning mainly, or after the car has sat for a long while. Ill back up out of my driveway, put it in first, go forward, and the car will choke. Only way to avoid it is to ride the clutch, or to take off VERY VERY slow.To make it clear of how slow, if I where leaving from a green light, id have lots of angry people honking behind me, lol. But if i take off normally, it will pause, then go, and SOMETIMES backfire. Its not because of cold morning weather, it happens if its the middle of the day and its been sitting for a few hours. Im in So.Cal, so it never really gets that cold to begin with. Any idea what it is?

Im going to do a few ignition mods soon, but I need to wait for my paycheck (starving student, he) . Next week Im going to check and advance the timing as well.

btw, i know ive been posting a lot of threads about my car, but Stangnet has the best troubleshooting over the net ive seen thus far. Thanks guys!

WalMart sells code scanners for about $25; pull the diagnostic codes and see what the computer is telling you about things. It will likely have an error code stored that will give you a clue as to what the problem is. AutoZone or PepBoys will often pull the codes for free. Since it seems temperature related, my guess is that either the coolant or air intake temperature sensors has taken a crap - but it's just a guess. You don't have to guess - the computer will likely point you directly to what's wrong. The diagnostic port is located in part of the harness behind the driver's strut tower.

Thats what I was going to tell you. Here is an easy way to pull the codes, this came from a chilton manual. You can buy a cheap test light and install it in place of the analog voltmeter, then the light will flash the codes.
