Problem with my clutch?

Hi guys,
Wanted to get your thoughts on what's going on with my clutch. I have a 01 GT (5 speed) w/ 98,000 miles. I'd definitely assume that the life of my clutch will be expiring before too long. My clutch isn't slipping or squeeling, but you can hear it making a noise while the car is running, and when you push in the clutch the sound is more significant. Pretty much the sound is like the sound you hear when you turn a steering wheel that has low or no power stearing fluid. It almost sounds like it's hydrolic, but I didn't think the clutch had any hydrolic components.

I plan on getting a new clutch when needed, I'd just like to wait as long as possible.

BTW, what clutch brand would you all recommend I relace it with? Only mods are off road X and K&N, underdrive pullies sooner or later. No realistic plans on a supercharger.

the sound is most likely your throwout bearing which comes with a new clutch kit and id suggest getting a spec,great clutches

Since you are staying close to stock, lots of guys here will recomend Spec Stage 1 or King Cobra depending on the type of tranny you have in your car.

McCleod will also get some recomendations from guys in here too.

If its T-45, get Kingcobra. And stay FAR FAR away from SPEC
If you have TR-3650, stay FAR FAR away from SPEC anyway. Get CF

That's strange....the boosted guys here are saying how much they like Spec, specifically Stage 3 for S/C cars.

Why dont you recommend them?

Their quality seems to be hit or miss (and my wife's 01 had a 'miss'...POS )

Not to hijack, but your location says from Dunedin and thats where I lived as of about a year ago, and now I drive through Dunedin to Clearwater for work.

What was wrong with the clutch? Installation or part related and was it for a T-45 or the 3650?

I'm tempted to upgrade my '99's stocker before I install a Novi during the summer and I dont think I want to spend that much money to not have the power hit the ground after the blower installation...

I have has 3 spec clutches and 2 centerforce.

they have all served me well.

If your boosted(or highly modded N/A) to the point where any other clutch out there can't hold on anylonger, and you only drive your car at Track, when absolute cramping capacity is needed, then SPEC is the way to go

As far as I'm concerned(and for my near stock output GT), Spec in any stage is waste, and darn right frustrating.
Like said above, they are either "hit" or "miss" clutch. Some works really really well, and for some, not at all.

Its like "on" or "off" clutch. Its either fully engaged, or not at all. No slippage. ZERO.

While this is good thing when absolute cramping force is needed(i.e. Track car), when your drive your car like 90% of us (i.e. Street, stop and go traffic, backing in and out of tight parking space where you want to be able to "creep" your car), its useless.
It just does not let you slip clutch to creep the car at all(When you try, it'll shatter, shakes, and do all sorts of weird thing). So u'll just have to pop the clutch to get anywhere(like when you drove manual trans car for the first time).

SPEC is great perpous built clutch. For racing. Just not for the street IMO

Thanks for all the replies guys. One last question...how do I find out which tranny I have. I heard they changed some of the parts they were putting on the 01GT's midway though that year, so just wanted to make sure.

An easy way to check what tranny you have is the build date. Check the sticker on the interior of your driver door and see what the build date is. I an on 01 GT that was built in 01/01 and I have a T-45. I'm not sure when the cutoff point is for the T-45/3650 switch is, but I'm pretty sure it was march to april of 01.

Also, search around, I've seen other threads discussing this issue.
