I think that if he does that, it's going to interfer with the dipstick. It's worth a try though. It would also help to use a shorter pulley, such as the 390 one I have, but it needs to be the same diameter or a little smaller to clear the crank I think. I also had a small block pulley but it used a smaller V belt, I don't think it would have worked well.

I just went through something similar. I had the guys at Street & Performance make me a custom pulley made for my odd application. ($205.00) for a single groove crank pulley.They'll make you one if it comes down to that.
I know you've been junk yardin, but there has to be a water pump pulley out there that is similar in dia, but has the groove 3/4" more towards the radiator.
You may want to check and see if the bolt pattern on your water pump flange is The same as chevy, dodge or ? if it is, you'd have a better chance of finding something.
Call March Perf. and talk to one of their tech guys and ask if that bolt pattern is shared by others. (beware of the chick that answers the phone, she allways has attitude)

You can try moving your alternator down and bolting it through the block grounding post and then adjusting brackets as needed to support the front, this should give you the 1/4-1/2 inch reverse movement needed to get onto the water pump pulley line. Its a hack, but it should get you running....just keep the RPMS down since you will end up most likely with only a 2 point mount....a pivot through the ground and the slider bar flopped on top of a waterpump bolt.
This image shows some all thread and some locking nuts for support threaded through the ground bolt....this is a hack through...no doubt about it....but it will get you on the road.

Measure from the back of your crank pulley (where it bolts to the balancer)
to the center of the 2nd groove (thats the location of the alt pulley)
maybe approx. 1.5"?
and try to use that measurement at the junk yard, to find a set
