I want to try timing gear but don't want to spend $200+ for edelbrock or pete jackson brands. Some folks sell on ebay "proform" brand for $50 for sbf. Anyone has experience whether it is worth a try? Is there a chance its teeth would be imprecisely CNC'ed, crack, bended, etc?

I got rid of a set of their rockers and replaced them with crane golds due to poor machining tollerances. No idea about their timing gear.

I wouldn't, it will self destruct and ruin your engine........same as a snap on versus a chineese socket set ( a couple hundres vs a couple dollars), you get what you pay for 50.00 will bareley buy you a decent timing chain......you will be sorry

Are you sure the eBay one is brand new and in fact from Proform? Got a link? Proform is probably out of the Ford gear drive business and these are the left overs, since online stores only list Chevy applications. There are a lot of cheap timing gears on ebay with no brand listed; I'd stay away from those. With the proliferation of cheap CNC machines there is a lot of junk out there made in people's barns.

Procomp is another chinese company doing cheap knock-offs. You're always better off paying more for a proven product than rolling the dice on a cheap knock-off. Especially on timing gears. If they break there goes your whole engine.

The Summit gear drive is $20 less than the name-brand sets. Summit re-badges stuff, so until you get the product you won't know if it's a Pete Jackson or Chinese clone. At that price though I can see it being one of the better-known brands. The down side though is that it only comes in a "noisy" version. But then again all gear drives are fairly noisy anyway, even for a "quiet" one.

i was going to ask if it was truly a pro-form gearset or if it was actually pro-comp. i wouldn't hve a probelm running a pro-form set but wouldn't touch a pro-comp with a 10 foot pole.

most pro form and pro comp is the same chinese crap, stay away from rocker arms, timing chains/gear drives, heads are so so, distributors are OK but some not, intake mani's have got pretty decent, ignition boxes are 50/50 good/bad.......like I said you get what you pay for......a 50.00 gear drive is a 50.00 gear drive.......like a 2.00 ratchet it will break real quick...........

pro-form is not the same quality as pro-comp and i'm not even sure they use chinese crap. they supply a lot of stuff to GM performance parts and i don't think GMPP would use chinese crap.

pro-form some decent quality parts and they have brand new duraspark distributors for anyone that cares, i plan on using one of their dizzy's for my car.
