Propane Injection Question

Hey guys, yes im a newbie just trying to learn and yes ive searched but didn't really find solid info. I have heard(from one of my friends) that propane has a high octane rating and its like runing race gas all the time and that it burns evenly throughout the cylinder, but is it safe to run it in a daily driver? How many of you guys are runing propane injection and what are your impressions? Thanks in advance for any information, i appreciate it.

I might be wrong but I think you can only inject propane in Diesels

But don't some vipers run propane/nitrous combo?

I never heard of vipers doing that ...

Diesels only !

to bad we can't do it with Gas engine too

You can definately inject propane into a gasoline engine and it will run. It will NOT have a nitrous affect. Propane is approximately 118 octane. That means if you run at least some part propane in the motor, it will increase the octane of the gasoline. That will allow you to run more boost and/or more compression.

So basically propane is like racing fuel. It will not make the car any faster, but it will let you run a motor that can make more power.

Yes you can run propane on gasoline engines, but you must make the appropriate modifications.

Not really a good idea because propane doesnt produce as much power as gasoline when ignited.

It's not quite as simple as that -- the challenge is that while propane, like natural gas, has a higher octane rating (resistance to combust), it also has a lower specific energy than gasoline. That means if all else is equal, for the same mass of fuel injected, you will extract less power out of propane than gasoline. So if propane displaces some of your gasoline, less power will be the result - unless - you can make other changes which take advantage of the increased octane rating and return the lost power - higher compression ratio, more boost, etc.

If there were significant advantages to injecting propane in a naturally aspirated gasoline engine, more people would be doing it. If you want to inject something that's really gonna make a difference - use nitrous. With the appropriate extra fuel, you'll feel the difference.
