Well I had the car out today, now has about 310 miles on the new engine. When I was driving to Fort Wayne today I noticed a sound. At about 2000 rpms +/- I noticed a weird sound. I guess you could describe it as a tapping sound. Any thing below or above 2000 rpms I dont notice it. I put it in park and reved it up to 2000 and I cant hear anything. I have an auto and I dont hear it in first or second but in third and OD I do, and OD its the loudest. Its not crazy loud but I can hear it. I dont know if its in my head or if its always done this and since Im actually listing for this stuff Im just now hearing it.

Can you guys help me out?

VT assembled the motor for you? If they did, I'm pretty confident in saying that PTV isn't the case.

VT assembled the short block and my builder installed the cams, heads, ect. I called them and asked them before I bought VT Stage 2 Blower cams if I would have to worry about PTV and they said no.

Is PTV contact very noticealbe? Like if I had it, the car wouldnt run right or there would be a very loud noise or something of the sort. The car runs great and idles fine , its a little rough with out a new tune but nothing horrible.

i dont know what it sounds like either but im curious as i will be doing the same thing in a couple of months. i bought the vt block but i have foxes cams.

i would think if you have a vt block and vt cams you should be ok as far as ptv contact is conserned. they make the two products you bought to go together. so its not like is a one time combo. i would guess you are ok. however, you should still try to find out what the noise is.

I'm assuming your engine builder degreed the cams?

Could be just an exhaust leak at the header. They tend to make themselves more apparent under load at lower RPM. PTV issues don't usually make themselves known right away until you start leaning on it and running the upper end of the tach. What kinds of injectors have you got? I've got a set of the old "fat body" Ford injectors and they're kinda noisy. Always clicking away.

I'd have to say that the chances of your car still running good with PTV issues is slim. I dont know for sure how long it would take to bend a valve, but I imagine it wouldnt take long.

If you're able to get all the wheels off the ground on a steady surface, have someone get in the car and hold it to 2000rpm in 3rd while you get in the engine bay and try to narrow the noise down to a specific area, that would help you and us better figure out what your problem is.

Lastly, perhaps you should call VT and talk to them about this. Afterall they assembled the engine.

I FRPP 42lbs injectors. I took the car back out to night and it ran fine I dont think I heard the noise as much this time. Its very odd though I only hear something at 2000 rpms in 3 and OD. I also never thought about an exhaust leak, Ill have to check that out.

One more thing, I think this is in the tune but this has happened three times now, my engine some times dies on me when coming to a stop or getting ready to take off. The rpms usually kind of fluctuate and drop real low and then steady out but the other three times they dip so low the engine dies. It happened tonight for the third time, the rpms dipped very low then it seemed like the engine died, the CEL came on and so did another light. I go to put the car in park (automatic) and then the car makes a very weird noise (sounds like its coming from the transmission) like something is still running or moving an it is somewhat grinding. The grinding is not a metallic sound just odd. I then shut the car off start it up and it runs fine. I just don’t know what is going on and its starting to frustrate me.

It's possible to have a PTV condition where it is so minimal that you wouldn't hear it. BUT, if you could actually hear PTV contact, it would be just a matter of seconds until something serious broke. That said, I doubt what you are hearing is PTV contact.

If you are only hearing it at a certain RPM, that would indicate that something is resonating with the harmonics that are present only at that specific RPM range.

You said the CEL came on, what were the codes? Most idle problems are related to vacuum leaks, have you checked for vacuum leaks?

I know when I first installed my short block last spring. I was constantly thinking I heard small taps and knocks. 6k later the car still runs well.

Thats what I think my problem is, Im just THINKING I heard a knock/tap but its not really there. Hopefuly thats the case.

Also Jive how many miles did you put on the new block before you had your car tuned.

The CEL came on after the car died you know when you turn on the accessories in you car and all the lights turn on thats what happened. Its not like the light comes on and stays on it just does it when it dies then goes away.

I figured it would be a vacuum problem but I figred that the tunes is just not for the new cams so thats whats causing it. Since the cams changed the vaccum at idel the computer doesnt really know what going on so its trying to adjust.

You really need to get the car tuned for your Stage 2 cams, especially since you are blown. Hopefully this tapping noise isn't something that has developed from a lean condition or worse, detonation.

When was the last time you checked your valve lash? Should be between .120-150 preload.

That is a very good point. If that noise was something to be to concerned about, your engine would have been shot by now. Just drive it like you stole it man. Best advice is: don't fix it if it ain't broke!!

Tune is on March 9. I took it out today and dont think I heard it or if I did it wasnt as bad. The car did die again though.

I wouldnt think this noise would be a result from a lean condition or detonation since its only happens in a certain gear at a certin RPM, but I dont really know.

It's likely unrelated to the car dying, but does the noise sound like it could be coming from the trans or torque converter?
