pull engine w/ trans attached?

I want to pull out both my engine and transmission. Should I pull them together as one, or one at a time? Which is easier to get out first? Will removing the engine leave the trans (if unsupported) teetering on it's mount? Or can it sit there fine without support? What about the bellhousing?

In my opinion it's easier to pull both, because it is a big pain in the @ss to get the input shaft, clutch disk and pilot bearing to line up when you are replacing just the engine.

When the engine is hanging from a cherry picker, or in a cradle, it's a lot easier to put that together.

It might be completely different for automatics, but automatics are boring, so I wouldn't know.

Also, I have only done engine swaps in a first gen (65) mustang, so the SN95 might have some issues that I don't know about. If you can pull them both at the same time, it's probably easier to do that, and install them together later.

Yeah, I'd like to do them together, I just don't know if the clearance is there or if it's really hard. The trans is a T-5.

I have never pulled them together but, it might not be to bad. I think you would just need to go slow which you probably would anyway. If not, there are only 4 bolts to the bell housing and 2 for the cross member and a good jacker works great.

I have done it in a fox body and it came out fine. Make sure you have plenty of clearance above the car tho. Some have problems with the engine hoist hitting the roof/ceiling when fully extended. The only problem I ran into was when it was almost out and the tranny tail had to be lifted 1/2 an inch to clear the nose of the car but that wasnt a problem in my opinion. Just keep an eye on it. This is the easiest way I have taken out a motor and a tranny. Going in went really smooth too! but then again it was on a fox body.

i just did this last weekend and it came out awesome so much easier than seperating just make sure u have a slider so u can give teh engine a hella angle to have ti all come out. also i has teh car a 1.25 feet off the ground the angle was alot easier to do!!!
