After many weeks of procrastinating.. I finally got the cherry picker and some help in pulling my motor. I had the hood off and some stuff disconnected prior
to today, but ended up having to take a bunch more stuff out. All in all, made a little bit of a trans fluid/ coolant mess, nothing major. Got the engine on a stand and the oil pan off... first thing I see is a bearing in the bottom of the pan.. ! damn. So its a std bore 289, I'd like to get around 400 flywheel hp, figure I'll just throw some higher compression pistons/better connecting rods, aftermarket heads.

Any comments or ideas are welcomed and greatly appreciated... this is my first rebuild of an old v8.

Where did the bearing come from? Rod? Main? Cam?

First off, get ziplock bags and label all your nuts and bolts, by the time you get the motor done you will have forgotten what most the stuff is.

I was sure it was a rod bearing, but I took all the rod caps off and they all had bearings so must be a main. So a stroker kit with 9.5-10:1 pistons, what kind of aftermarket heads should I run? afr165's?

I'm not a head expert. My 67 has Canfield Racing heads. And there's Twisted Wedge, Edlebrock, and others. I'm not sure what would be best for you. I've always been told to make sure you get a combination of heads, cam, intake and carb that work well with each other.

With a stroker you are probably better off using the AFR185 heads. I bought a crate motor from Keith Craft, I picked the 331 450HP version, it has AFR 185 heads, used an Air Gap intake, Speed Demon 650 carb, Comp Cams XE266HE, it is a roller block with roller rockers. On their dyno it produced 410 HP @4800 rpms, 430 # torque @ 4100rpms. I wanted a less aggressive cam and a dual plane intake, this explains the drop from their claim and my results.

The recent test of cylinder heads in MM&FF used a 347 stroker and they used the 185 heads on that motor.
