I cant remeber if i need to reset the timing when i pull out the distributer while the car is off or if its ok to just put it back it where it came out at? i didnt mark anything btw.. If so then how do i set the timing? kinda pathetic that im a mechanic and have never set timing on a car before. thanks!

If you didn't mark anything, it's pretty much impossible to put it back in the exact same place. You'll prolly have to reset the timing unless you somehow remember EXACTLY how it was turned before you pulled it. There are others on here who can take you through the process much better than I can since I've never had to do it.

The guys are right. Be cognizant of ensuring you're on the compression stroke of #1 (the exhaust stroke will puff a little air out too, which can be misleading). When stabbed on the exhaust stroke, the car can run, but it will do so like poopey.

Without having marked it, as said just take it to TDC on 1 compression and restab it. Use your light to get it spot on.

Good luck.

You've gotten good advice form all above :nice:

Even if you did mark the dizzy and block :)

There is a very good chance you could be off a degree or two :(

Soooooo

Yes ... You need to .........

Stab it back to the original position
Take the spout out
Use #1 plug wire with t-lite and set to desired setting
Put spout back

That makes you then ........... Good to Go

stab the distributer?? whats that mean? and which one is number 1 and how do i know its the compression stroke? and then i just point the light at the balancer and it will light up the degree mark im at? also should i mark the balancer at 10* with some white out or something so i can see the mark(its rusty) thanks for the help!

Stab is just one of those different words used for ... install

You Know ......... Like:
slug is piston
dizzy is distributor
hole is cylinder
etc

#1 is passenger side front of motor
2,3,&4 are behind it in that order
#5 is driver side front of motor
and
6,7,&8 are behind it in that order

As for the compression Q .........

You can stick your finger over the plug hole and feel the air being pushed
around your finger as the slug comes up in the hole as things are just
about right for the big bang don't ya see

Since you got a 50 50 chance of being on the correct stroke ;)
I've never worried about all that and just line up the hb on tdc :)

cause if it is right .....

The motor will easily fire right off the bat and rev freely :nice:
and
If by chance it is not on the correct stroke ........

The motor will not fire as easy and will rev up rough and ragged :notnice:
sooooo
When I've seen that happen ...I just position the rotor 180 degrees
different and the motor fires right up and all is good to go :D

#1 on the dizzy is usually marked on the cap and you "stab" it in such a
fashion that .........
1) #1 slug on the compression stroke is tdc
2) the hb is lined up at tdc
3) dizzy rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire

Yes ... a chalk mark of white or lime green helps a good bit :nice:

You take the spout out and line up the edge of the timing indicator
with the mark on the hb you have chosen to use.

Don't forget to put the spout back
and
Don't put the spout anywhere on the car while you are doing all this
or
You stand a chance of loosing it while testing :bang:
Cause you forgot to put it back :rlaugh:
