I am going to start on my engin swap next weekend. I was wondering what is the easyest way to go about doing this? The Trans is an AUTO if that matters.

A) Pulling motor alone?

B) Pulling motor and tranny together?

I do not need to pull the trans (not replacing it or working on it) but if it makes things easier I might do that. But to me it just seem like more of a hastle to pull the trans with the motor.IDK

lol I mean why bother with doing something you dont have to do. But yall know more than I do as this being my first rodeo

If I do just pull the motor how hard is it to line everything back up?

Thanks

You don't have to pull the trans with the motor. It's just alot easier to mate the tranny and engine outside the tight confines of the car. But with an auto trans, might be easier to leave it in the car, this way you don't have to remove the cooling lines and make a damn mess everywhere!

The torque converter nuts can be a real PITA, but I just take the cover off and use a 14mm short socket and the slimest ratchet I can find, then the motor will turn until the ratchet stops it from moving and the nuts come right off.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions if you need to!

What seemed to make it easier? Having the trans to help line things back up?

Disconnecting the transmission from the body was easier than trying to disconnect the transmission from the engine. If I remember right, to get the top bolts holding the transmission to the engine you have to drop the crossmember and drop the tranny some. At that point, the transmission is pretty much out anyway.

It's MUCH easier to line up the tranny to the engine when it's out of the car. Since you have to unhook about 90% of the transmission anyway, might as well pull it at the same time.

If you don't need the engine out but need to remove the tranny, well you have to go through the process. There's a lot to unhook to get the engine out.

I always take out the transmission whenever I have to pull an engine. Even if I only want to work on the engine, I'd rather take the transmission off on a shop table / floor / stand / basically any place other then bolted underneath the car.

dropped the trans 3 times in one year.......I think if I ever pulled this engine I would pull them both and mate the trans with the motor outside the car...jmo

I have pulled the motor out of my car three times in the last ten years. Twice with the trans and once without. I had a hell of a time getting everything back together when I seperated them inside the car. I would pull both out.

What do you have for tools / workspace? That comes into play as well. Trying to line the tranny and engine back up can be a pain in the butt to say the least. If you have the tools and ability to safely remove it as one unit, then why not? So whatre you swapping from / to? V6 to V8? 302 to 351? 302 to fresher 302? Or some combination I failed to mention?

Nevermind, I looked at your sig and got my answer. Sounds like fun. I just started my stang for the first time in four months yesterday as it was near 60 surprisingly. Was gonna keep it out for the weekend but theres two days of snow in the forecast so the cover went back on after 15 miles or so of driving. Oh well.
