Depends on the abuse in which it receives.

That depends on what T-5 you are starting with. Torque rates vary from 240ft/lbs to as high a ~500ft/lbs with aftermarket race gears. The strongest factory T-5 is known as a T-5z at 330ft/lbs.

its all in how you drive it and how often you drive it my friend

i know a guy who has torn up multiple T5's with a very mild combo, but on a daily driven car that saw its share of abuse, and ive also seen a T5 last quite awhile with over 500rwhp running through it, driven occasionally and not brutally hard

T-5's are great! I have never had any trouble with any of the ones in any of my Mustangs. I had a HCI Intercooled Procharged 5.0L pushing 11-12 lbs of boost. I ran this car at least 50+times at the strip and was very abusive on the street. I never missed gears, and I never powershifted it. It held up great with those mods, and a CFDX clutch. The car had 35,000 miles.

5.0 magazine just did a build up on a T-5 with a 1,000 kit....it was bada$$....check it out, look at how much bigger the gears are....They say it can handle up to 650HP and torque.

I couldn’t disagree more. A t-5 will normally not last long with higher h/p and torque levels. Hell, they are barely capable at stock h/p and torque levels. The best thing to do to ensure the T-5's live long is to not powershift and either have a weak ass clutch or tires that break loose with the slightest hint of throttle. Really though…if you eventually plan on pushing it you should sell it now while you can recoup some cash and pick up the likes of a TKO. Once the tranny goes boom it will be nearly worthless.

I would still use a T-5 in any Mustang I will ever have. Heck, I would like to swap one into my Cobra making over 400RWHP! The T-45 is junk, I have gone through two. I had 3 T5 cars, one with 35K and over 400RWHP...perfect. I had a 100K T5...in a stock 5.0L...perfect....I had a 145K T5 in a 91 GT with a built 302...perfect. I guess I have just had good luck.

I think a lot of it has to do with the driver rowing the gears. No tranny is going to like powershifting and missing gears. Get a good shifter with some stop bolts and keep the powershifting to a minimum and it should be ok for a while.

I did a aod-t5 conversion on my coupe. Got my first t5 and it was junk from the start. Got ripped off. Then found one for sale for 150 bucks! LOL. It has last for 2 years and has survived 3.5k, 4k, and 5k launches. Apparantly it's stronger than my stock axles were b/c one of those let go with the dead hook, 4k launch.

Mine worked flawlessly at the track and on the street…until I started upping the power. Just because you have had t-5's last in stock and modded apps does not make them strong by any means. Judging by your sig you don’t seem to be runny sticky tires…and really are not producing gobs of torque. Remember, it's not the h/p that kills the tranny…but rather the torque.

It is not all in how you drive. The stock t-5's have a notoriously weak case and cluster…which when stressed beyond the torque rating can catastrophically fail (typically 3rd gear). There have been plenty of us who don't beat on their trannys yet have exposed their weakness. Do not think that just because you don't power shift you are safe. Power shifting puts massive loads on the tranny in much the same way as those who are producing excessive h/p and torque. If you are pushing your t-5 tranny far beyond it's stock torque ratings…be prepared to pony up for another when it goes. It may not happen for a week…a year or even longer. Make no mistake though, it will let loose.
FYI, my grenaded while easing into 3rd getting into boost. I never powershift…nor do I ever miss a gear. I was as gentle as you could be going into WOT and as soon as boost came up and I caught traction…kaboom it went.

True, torque would kill if more. As far as tires, I have just run Nitto Drags. My Cobra isn't a torque monster at all. The car I had with the motor built and the Procharger was though. It held great in that car, so that is pretty much what I am going buy. I just like stock componenets in Mustangs. I have heard bad things about Tremecs and things like that.

Not for nothing but I have read about people blowing 3rd gear in g force t5s as well as 3550's. Everyone raves about tremecs but how many people have them, and out of thos people who do, how many have problems getting into gears?

Not saying tremec are no good, as I have no experience with any other than my old 3650, but I have too heard people complain about them.

T-5s are junk if you actually drive the car, there's no 2 ways about it. Mine broke with a stock motor on the street, and with little street tires.

Intresting topic, I just converted to a T-5 from an AOD and I must say it is fun dumping the clutch every now and then. My only disapointment is that it started jumping out of 2nd gear, and it really scares me when it does! lol

Rarely (if ever) have I heard any stories of people blowing 3rd gear out in a 3550 or tko…at least not nearly to the extent of the T5's. The only issues I have heard of with the 3550 is a weak output shaft (relatively speaking)…and even that is only an issue with high torque, high rpm dead hooking at the track. They (3550 and tko's) also seemed to be plagued with high rpm (6500+) shifting issues and for some…a bit to notchy shifting action. Still though, the pro's of the 3550, tko's etc. seem to far outweigh the cons IMHO.
