I have been looking at the xe274h for the past few days. My combo im planning to run will be most out of the box stuff. I am still deciding on the heads but am leaning toward the afr165's or the standard tw. Its a carb engine and will have a edel air gap with a 650+ carb. Im wondering if that cam will be too big for those heads or if i need a smaller cam. Dont want to hear anything about custom cams either so dont bother. This setup will be on my daily driver but it takes a lot for me to complain. Even with a stage 2 spec clutch in traffic I wasnt bitchin.....

give me some opinions!!!

thanks

As long as the springs on the heads are upgraded..AFR may have upgraded them themselves, then you'll be fine. The idea is having the heads be usable to the end of the range of the cam or vis versa..if either dies out early then your leaving power on the table if you will.

well, you can use the double valve springs but i heard you need to machine your heads for those. Im thinking about the beehive springs, have any opinions on those? they look sick

thanks for the reply

I recall reading somewhere that DSS or CHP quit installing the xe274hr in their long blocks because they kept grenading the valve train.

If I remember correctly the ramp rates on the lobes are too aggressive in motion transfer and produce too much load on the lifters and pushrods.

The worst thing in a daily driven car is not a lopey cam or "undesireable" speed parts, it's unreliability, first and foremost.

Please don't take this as fact, just recollection.
Try a little research and see what you find.

I know alot of people having issues with both the above companies..but not as a result of the cam selection.

Are we talking about the hydraulic flat tappet or the hydraulic roller cam?
I have the 274XE flat tppet cam in my 351w and I like it a lot! It runs out of steam at around 5600 though. It has TONS of low-mid range power!
I don't know anything about the roller version.

If I had that combo that's the cam I'd get if I were going off-the-shelf. I would consider a custom cam, though.

i am considering this cam as well, but my high ports should handle them better.

Shouldn't be. The 165s powerband is idle-6000rpm. The air gaps is 1500-6500rpm. That cam falls right in the middle. It stretches to 6200rpm. You'll be able to spin it to 6500rpm easy.
